Unfortunately the babies were gone yesterday. The mother and father were also not in sight..
Did they leave the nest or do you think a predator got them?

You have a sod roof?

This determined mother has her nest within 5 feet of the gravel shoulder of the two lane highway in front of our house. That is gravel in the grass around her.

Yesterday the temperatures reached 100 so she simply stood over her eggs to shade them.
That is a typical nest site for a Killdeer. I had one try to nest in the garden one year. She laid two eggs on the bare ground but abandoned them when me being around the garden became too much for her.

I heard footsteps on the roof this morning. When I went out to do the rounds, I found this.

Yes, her nest is 10 feet from our driveway and cars speed past on the highway. She doesn't mind the cars, but we dare not get close with the lawn mower or she fakes a broken wing and leads us away. We just leave her be Scoping her our with binoculars...there may be three eggs in the nest. We often have Killdeer with their babies in the pastures.

Of all the birds that I have seen, I think Killdeer do the very best broken wing of all of them.

:frow:frow:hugs:hugsRight back at you!

Sorry I missed the yoga party poll. Wow that went big fast!
Yes, I do have yoga pants ...but I don't wear them outside.
This Friday we are having a kitchen party.
Wear an apron and cook something.
