➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

So, Kiki, with a solo quail about to pop, what is next on the agenda of experimentation?

I was successful in dragging my feet until the feed store was devoid of chicks. All according to the prophecy. :D

Your rooster is growing nicely. As soon as he sings, I'll call you for pick up. ;) We've got wing feathers, but these chicks are tiny! I hope they aren't bantam weight.

Well I am not so sure about the last quail egg either.
:barnie:confused:

I do have 3 more horse eggs in the bator right now on day 4.

I think my next and first real hatching experiment is going to be real quail eggs bought from a real breeder...which I will order soon and have delivered the day after we return from a vacation.
:celebrate

Having good eggs makes all the difference.

You deserve a good egg. :)

So do you raise rabbits for meat or other reasons?

And why do people raise pigeons?

Social/cultural/regional differences make it hard for me to understand why anyone would raise rabbits or pigeons, just trying to understand. I figured I'd go straight to the source here and ask.
Re pigeons Thank you so much for asking:hugs

The domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) is apigeon subspecies that was derived from the rock dove (also called the rock pigeon). The rock pigeon is the world's oldest domesticated bird. Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets mention the domestication ofpigeons more than 5,000 years ago, as do Egyptian hieroglyphics.

They are used for show, pets, for their meat, but primarily for sport including various types of competitions, mostly acrobatics and racing.

During the middle ages pigeons provided an important source of fresh meat during winter and their dropping were a source of nitrogen fertilizer before the advent of modern 'chemical' fertilizers. Droppings were collected from specialized pigeon housing called dovecotes that were secured against theft of the valuable poop! Example below.

Pigeon racing is the national sport of Belgium and is popular world wide. A race in South Africa is famous for it's million dollars in prize money.

They are smart, beautiful and show interesting behaviors.
And did I say they are the world's oldest domesticated bird! :old
