➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I honestly didn’t pay attention. They drew them up in syringes and put them in bags with my fur kids name. It’s the yellow liquid stuff but I can’t think of the name right off.
they just died. AC wasn’t very big for what day they were on. They were alive on Wednesday.
Oh ok.

I think those kind are the hardest duck eggs to hatch??

Oh, how awful, I am so sorry. :hit :hugs
Thanks! I bought a dozen local but only 4 were fertile and I lost 2 last week.

I don't know if you see but I already starting looking for other local stores that sell balut.
I think I am now willing to drive across town (just not in rush hour traffic times) to go pick up balut eggs from different stores.
I know you looked at the one store with the purple egg tray. Hope you find some live ones!

Remember that veterinarians are just people who have a lot of education on the subject of animal health. They are still subject to personal opinion, preference, and bias. Feeding is one of those areas where you'll get different opinions vet by vet. It doesn't mean one is right or wrong, just that there are risks/benefits and they weigh them differently.

Medications are sometimes in this category too which is why I asked about Safeguard. Unless there is a resistant strain, I'd expect my vet to start with the small guns and save the heavy artillery for extreme situations. For example, I had one vet suggest daily OTC, coated aspirin for hip dysplacia pain in a 13-year old Brittany. We moved and when I took her in for her visit with a new vet, they were upset by this treatment and said that this would wreck her kidneys. They wanted me to use an expensive prescription drug (one which has kidney damage as the primary side effect risk!) I actually switched vets over this because I didn't feel like the advice was based on medical evidence.

Yes and yes. I upset a doctor because I didn't want to take the prescribed snake oil. If you are trying to kill me and I ask questions, then you get upset because you have a piece of paper hanging on the wall from 100 years ago? Good-bye!

Yep, I've fired several doctors. I've also put several of them in a bind. For example, the "you should have your wisdom teeth removed." statement. Ben fed to me by 5 different dentists. Why? they MAY hurt. IF they hurt, I'll be back. Now, 34 odd years later, they say keeping the teeth may be better for our health?!? Really. I'm not amused. I still have my teeth too. They are almost as old as I am.

Question everything.

Like the bacon and egg breakfast. The hen has an interest in you having a good breakfast. The pig is committed.

What food is good or bad is crazy to me. I’ve been attempting Keto. It’s a no sugar low carb diet. It’s the sugar part that kills me. So much stuff that doesn’t need sugar has it. Milk. Bacon. Bread.
So much stuff is so chemically modified it’s not even funny.

Good/bad changes too often to keep track.

I'm going to be up front with my bias -- I don't believe in non-sustainable diets. I'm on a weight loss program of my own but mine involves exercise and mindful eating. Period. Simple and sustainable and while it may not be trendy or super fast, the weight doesn't rush back later and I don't feel like crap or find myself unable to enjoy a meal out.

SO... Milk has naturally occurring sugar, not added sugar. That's what lactose is, a sugar. Milk is after all, first and foremost, a food for babies. Humans are a bit weird for drinking another animal's breast milk for their entire lives but, hey, sugar and fat so milk tastes good to most of us. The milk substitutes tend to have added sugar so they are palatable.

Bacon has sugar in the curing mixture and it's purely for flavor. But, mmmm... Bacon.

Yeast bread must have sugar because the yeast needs to eat it to create those precious bubbles or the bread would be a rock. Not all bread is equal, though. There is a huge difference between a King's Hawaiian roll and a slice of whole wheat ;)

Bread doesn't need sugar -- just flour, yeast, salt and water. I make all my own bread now thanks to the discovery no-knead bread recipe. It is super simple to make and I have varied the basic recipe countless ways -- changing the flours, adding nuts, putting it in loaf pans for sandwich bread. It look so impressive the first time you pull it from the oven, you'll be taking pictures to show your friends.

I was learning about Keto and the science behind it made sense to me. Instead of giving my body mounds of sugar to use as fuel it’s using the fat I’ve stored in an unhealthy way. Forcing myself to read labels and seeing sugar I never thought about has been eye opening. My plan is to go Keto for several months. That will reset some of my body systems. I’m more aware of what I’m eating moving forward and that’s what I need.
