Hmm.. looks like you’ve got some tentacle action going on up top (lol)? I like the way the bright center pulls you in. You could try wrapping more tentacles around and really darkening the outside border (in both the creepy sense and with shadows), like a “hallucination trap” sort of thing. Giving me some elf-siren sort of vibes.
Oh, and I guess I kinda cut off part of it. Here is the full. I really like your idea of going dark around the border. Lemme see what I can do with that.

That is sick. Definitely beefing up your shadows and contrast in general will help that creepy dramatic effect. Maybe a rogue oozy tentacle grabbing at a tree or coming out of a deep shadow, like the illusions falling apart.. ooo that sounds cool.

I can only do realism, it’s obnoxious. I try my best to make whimsical or interpretive pieces but it really never works.

Hell, yeah! Love it. Ok. Gonna try the overlap. Crowd sourcing ideas, for the win.

Edited to add: I could only do realistic until I was about 30. Not sure what happened, but I'm not sure if I broke or the world did.

I’ll be expecting future updates. :pop

I get the creative thoughts but I have trouble putting them on paper. I find it hard to put “emotion” into realistic drawings sometimes, if you know what I mean? Of course, almost all of my drawings are animals.

I’ve always wanted to be able to do funky “loose” watercolor, or thick stroke minimalistic paintings, but I just can’t. My brain don’t work that way!

It might, one day. I thought my brain would never function in such a fashion. Hyper realism only, which I was good at but bored by. I still can't do the thick stroke minimalist style (I wish, but my hands hate it).
I think your background in your last rooster painting is an amazing start into the realm beyond. You have the surrealism in you. Just gotta tap into it. Though if I had your talents in realism, I might not :)
I think that's why colors are such a great start. It bleeds into other areas and thoughts to really invoke some interesting ideas. Then you can't stop!
Don't say I didn't warn you. Acid chickens. Scary stories backgrounds. It's your calling.
