➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Okay so I put 4 in each box plus the fake egg already in each. And then I also put 3 in the corner of the coop because I have one that always lays there lol in the old coop, she was good about laying in the box but now in the new one, I guess the corner is better??? :idunno but anyway, we will see what happens. I was going to put all or most in one box but they don't like or ever use the middle one (except occasionally, like when I first moved them or if it's urgent but now almost never eggs in it, I think that beam in the middle makes it hard to get in) and I didn't want to put all the "eggs" in their favorite boxes and have a broody hog it, slowing down laying or anything. And really, thinking about it, I'm not even sure that I want a broody because I am trying to save eggs for winter when they stop or at least slow down (and trying to eat store eggs while I do, even expensive semi local ones, is torture lol) and some are already molting so laying is already pretty slow atm so idk why I would willingly slow it down more but you guys really have given me a hatching bug LOL but at the very least, we will see if this idea works so I can try it in spring if I'm not ready now. Or if it works, I'll get eggs lol but I also want a puppy.

Forgot the pics lol 20180811_204057.jpg 20180811_204118.jpg

Let us know in about two weeks if it works.
Do you have a rooster?

You do know that going broody is all hormonal right?

I do not have a rooster but if it works I was going to buy some hatching eggs or chicks.

And yeah, I know but I figure it's worth a shot. I have had one go broody when I didn't collect eggs for a few days or week and there were tons in there and they literally went broody and rolled every single egg under them. :lau

I think that was Penny though :hit

But I did have an Australorp go broody once under similar circumstances so worth a shot.

If not, I will try it again in the spring when they might be more inclined to raise chicks.

It's been a busy day today. Between checking in here off and on throughout the day we've been outside trying to finish up the new coop. Just need to do the nesting box, roosting bar and poop board, ramp and just touch up painting. Had the ducks outside again today. The chicks all come over to check them out thru the fencing and eventually lay in the shade next to the ducks. I am hoping that is a good sign and not just because it was hot and there was a shady spot lol. One of my chicks makes this awful noise. I swear she is a most complaining pullet. It's not a bawk bawk. It's a screechy type noise. Kinda sounds like scraaaaaaaaaw-scraw-scraw-scraw-scraw-scraw. It's long and drawn out lol. I tell her she fusses too much. I think they're getting pretty close to POL. I finally opened the nesting boxes tonight when I cleaned out their coop. I've had them blocked off because they liked to try to sleep in them at first. And I put in a couple of those fake ceramic eggs. I think I still have a couple/ few weeks yet (they're 17 weeks old) but they are getting close. We'll see what happens.
As for the quails.... I guessed they'd hatch Sunday morning. Looking promising. ;)
