➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I think that keeping sick birds and recovered birds is a bad idea if you plan on selling or showing.
This is what I think right now.
I'm not sold on this idea.
There is some research supporting maternal antibodies being passed on to offspring from birds who have survived a strain.

Look, I know and understand where you all are coming from. I am fully aware that good biosecurity is extremely and invaluably important. I understand and respect the need to protect other flocks.

But what I cannot get past is the idea of killing every bird in my possession if it won't make a difference in the end.
Why would I go through the heartache and loss of hundreds of dollars to terminate everything if it is vain. Keep in mind that certain Marek's strains are also transmitted by wild birds. I cannot stop that... legally.
And why would I spend the fortune that it costs to get a necropsy in WI only to confirm what I am fairly certain to be true?

To me, the cost and effect does not balance out to be worth the effort.

I just cannot reason this one.

Oops I see the Wild bird point was made already... late to the party as usual. I totally see your point @Cyprus. You aren't saying you want to show or sell sick birds just that you don't want to cull them if they can survive this. Kudos to your commitment to your birds. I thought mine had a respiratory illness last year and was just going to close my flock and not let any in or out until I realized all their symptoms directly correlated with the use of DE in their run(bad advice at the feed store). For the record no symptoms since discontinuing use of DE in run.

For the record I think NOT culling mareks flocks and breeding for resistance is a smart theory. But expert I am not. Just my humble opinion.

I have a long PM with two Marek's flock havers.
I don't think you understand.
My last attempt to educate him ended with him screaming "You can't tell me what to do!"
Don't get anymore eggs or birds from him, please.

Oh nice. Thankfully my route is toll-free, I like being early too.. teacher’s pet.

Good to know. I was just reading about how to become certified the other day, not that I ever plan on selling, let alone having more than 30 birds. How did you get past the 16 week old thing for your babies that are the same age as mine?
Do you still think most of those are boys, by the way? I’m pretty sure Floppy is my only roo.
We didn’t have to test the younger ones since they are our hatched ones, and our others were 15 weeks (and we originally planned to test the week after) but the tester’s daughter was coming to visit then so she went ahead and did it a week early.

We have two definite boys, one is crowing and the other charged me today. I think our Brahma and lighter Langshan are pullets though!
