If she is using well water, algae can be a real bear. My garden and coop area are on well water and it grows algae like no one's business. My algae is the kind that grows on the sides of the waterers. It is not slimy or scummy, so don't know if that kind is more problematic. The water itself is clear, there is just lots of green algae growing in the containers, even doing my best to keep the waterer shaded, periodically scrubbing out the containers, and changing the water regularly.

The good news is that the birds seem totally down with the algae-water. Their favorite waterer is actually the big 8 galloner with the most algae in it (the hardest one to clean). Everyone seems healthy

At this point, I'm just rolling with it. I've heard ACV can make birds less inclined to drink the water, and it is so hot and dry here, I don't want to risk that.

Healthy algal bloom is good sign in an aquarium but not sure for drinking water. That helps none but I think I'd be less concerned about algae than slime film.

Hmm, that's a good point, I hadn't thought of that... maybe I'll make sure to train some down time too lol

WHOA! Was that from brushing him? Or did you comb him or? My friend's Golden looks like the first one most times and I thought maybe it was a bad breeder lol they use a furminator i think but that's it. She's like 6. The year old puppy still looks good.

Thank you! I did FIVE today!!! :woot

Except I think I got a little too greedy/in a hurry to do more while he was letting me/see how many I could do while he was letting me and quicked him :( he barely reacted though. Except I couldn't find the damn quik stop powder anywhere (it was in the cabinet with the clippers and shampoos and supplements and stuff but now not. Idk if my mom moved it or what) so I had to use corn starch. Took a bit longer, spilled it on the floor, etc. But it worked once I packed it on thick enough.

He's so pretty

It works really well! But I must be doing it wrong cause I usually get it all over myself lol
Just combed, his back still needs to be furminated. He gets very tangley very fast.
Thank you. He’s the prettiest.

Exactly! I've bleached the waterers to kill the existing slime.... 2 days later it's forming again. Even in the opaque 5 gallon bucket with horizontal nipples that is inside the coop. :he

Yeah, the only way I can have sparkling waterers is to scrub them daily and bleach them at least every other day. My waterers are large and unwieldy, and are up a hill, a good distance from the house. Aside from all the extra work, I just couldn't justify using that amount of bleach on an on-going basis. We are on a septic system, so I wouldn't want to put all that down the drain, so I would have to work out a disposal site.

When I first got chickens, I was scrubbing and stressing over it and my husband said: "Do you know if algae will hurt them?" Me: Well no, but it looks gross. Husband: *eye roll.*

It's been 5 years now with algae in the water. Maybe my chickens got hardened off to it or something, but they seem fine. I just make sure to keep the waterer free of poop, dirty straw and like.
