➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I should have weighed my Brahma hens. Those things probably weigh like 25lbs :gig they are such pigs!

Hahahah Brahmas are huge anyway!! And same with mine! Lol my Barred Rock and Australorp hens are such pigs!! Lol especially the two Australorps. The BR is and I thought she was one of the top hens but even she sometimes gets chased away if it’s a really really good treat!! LOL the Australorps want everything for themselves!! But they have been better about sharing lately, not chasing the EEs and BOs off when they get remotely close anymore, they can get bites now, unless it’s super good, like meat or something totally novel, then they chase everyone away!! Lol little porkers!!

Oh I know. We have five soon to start laying pullets that we are introducing into the flock and the older hens are chasing them all over the place. Our rooster hasn’t been good about keeping the peace either though.

I am glad it is not just mine!! I thought maybe it was because they were hatchery birds or because I raised them wrong or something haha the weird thing is they have all grown up together. But they were such bullies for a while!! Then they calmed down a bit and now they are really calm. I think moving to the new coop and run has helped them!! The other coop and run was wayyyyy too small and they have way more room in this one so are happier I think! Lol I still need to expand the run but it’s plenty big enough for them theoretically. Especially since there is no longer a coop in the middle of it LOL before, I had the coop inside the run, so it made the run way more divided and small, especially since the coop had hardware cloth walls/stilts on 2 1/2 sides I couldn’t remove lol old coop was just a 3x3 coop kit from TSC that was originally only intended to use when they were little chicks but it took us 2 years to finish the new coop lol so they were in it way too long. Fine for chicks but obviously as adults, it was getting wayyy too crowded. Especially since the run is only 6x12 and with the coop in the middle, it was basically split in half, and they rarely got to free range, it was definitely a bad situation, despite me trying to give them things to do. But now they have an entire 4x8 coop and the full 6x12 run with nothing in it except food and water so they have plenty of room now. Coop on the outside and a covered/hardware clothed ramp into it, hole cut into the fence lol so I think they are all a bit less grumpy now with all the extra room :lau and especially with one less hen because sadly we also lost a hen a year ago, fall 2017, right before they moved into the new coop, April 2018. Feel bad she never got to experience the new coop :( but I think she had a good life anyway. But anyway, now with all the new space, and one less hen, they are much happier I think. Although the stupid things spend a lot of time inside lately lol also, it’s kind of funny, I think they are so used to only having a 3x3 coop that they don’t really use the back half at all lol although of course that is also my fault because of a somewhat poor design choice, putting the nest boxes and roosts in the front of the coop so they don’t have to venture to the back ha but they do sometimes, I have one that lays in the back corner, and I also recently put oyster shell back there so now they go there more often. But it is weird. The silly things have all this new room and they only use half the coop ha

Really really tempted to buy these right now LOL but I won’t. Will take them out of the cart. But UGH. I need more chickens. Also, this list is way narrowed down, I originally had like 9 breeds lol wanted some Wyandottes and a Leghorn too. And a couple others. But tried to narrow it down lol thinking of also adding some meat birds too but idk. Probably won’t buy more chickens though, I don’t quite have room for 6, but I will make room then consider it lol might make a totally separate coop so my oldies lives don’t get all chaotic and interrupted aha I am too nice :lau but they are 3 years old. So I want more so I have more eggs and/or can sell some haha also part of why I am unsure. Maybe I should just replace these with all leghorns and see links haha anyone have experience with any of these breeds? Are they good layers?

We have an open air coop/run, and the grow out is a prefab coop.
Chickens are just the weirdest things aren't they?

When we move we are going to get a large shed and convert it into a coop, then put a run on the outside. I want to build in a brooder and also get roll out nest boxes that we access from the outside if needed.

The ducks and goose will get their own run and coop.

I have a NHR but she is crazy and honestly not a very reliable layer. My EE is eh. Her green color is fading fast, but her eggs are at least pretty consistent.

I would love an open air coop but not sure it would work with our climate. Sorry, kinda worded the other one weird making it seem like it was open air but it was prefab from TSC, what I meant to say was it was raised about 2 feet off the ground and the legs had hardware cloth on them rather than the coop cause it was designed with an attached run. We took the run off but the part under the coop could not remove. So it made the run way smaller.

And they really are the weirdest things!!! Lol I love when they get a piece of meat or bread and run around like little velociraptors :lau

That sounds like an awesome set up!! I hope you get to do that :)

And aw that stinks :( I have heard kind of mixed things about the breed. Was worried about them being mean or bullies in temperament like hatchery RIRs but then I have also heard some say they are nice and/or friendly and lay really well So idk. I am sure everyone has different experiences. I am glad to hear the negatives as well as the good because it helps me consider whether or not to add them. I may ax them. Idk. I kinda wanna try them. Maybe I should find a breeder for those? And yeah, my EE’s color faded too after about maybe a year or two. It used to be light blue :( then it turned almost white and she’s had a couple grey eggs too and some greenish. My other EEs color doesn’t seem to have faded quite as bad but definitely faded. Also my one EE sometimes stops for like 4-6 months at a time and doesn’t always lay consistently anymore whereas my other EE lays practically every day and is an excellent winter layer. She is one of the only chickens laying right now. So it is mixed even with my two from the same hatchery. That said, the other EE (blue laying one) used to lay really well and lay HUGE XL/jumbo eggs when she did lay and sometimes double yolk so that was a plus. The other one weighs large according to the scale but they look more medium to me ha not the biggest but pretty big.

Oh my list! I would cut it down to however many you can afford/fit into your coop and which breeds suit your needs.

Yeah, the list is definitely hugeeeee hahah I want every breed :lau but I really wanna try Speckled Sussex and Partridge Rock and possibly the Wyandottes but I’ve heard mixed things about them being bullies. And then I am kind of curious to try the other breeds I had in the pic. And I never used to want to try sex links because of the health and lifespan but I kind of want at least one super layer lol so thinking of adding those and maybe a leghorn.

Yeah our NHR is not a nice hen at all, very pushy and bully like but she also is on the bottom of the pecking order. Meyer may have better stock though
