I dumped a garbage can of wood shavings (from the shop) in front of the coop in hopes that it would make it at least partially passable. As it was, I was worried about chickens drowning, lol! It was okay every morning, because it would freeze solid, but by the end of the day it was awful.

I was a very bad girl this winter. I know a lot of people will disapprove.

I just let them eat snow instead of giving them water all winter. Luckily they did great.

You've just got chooks, right? I have a few that almost totally eschew liquid water in favour of snow all winter. Particularly snow that's on my boots. I have no idea why.

Yes! They all flock to my boots. No idea why as there's countless feet of snow right outside their pop door.

Yup, just chooks for now. Now that I have running water it will be a lot easier to add duckies.

I've seen the little ones trying to dust bathe in their shavings so I went and got them a dish full of sand. At first they all try to get in at once and try to eat it. Eventually I finally see them use it.

They're so adorable.

Yes, she has seals when the ice starts thawing and flowing. The north pole is a lively place all year round!
