➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Well. That's what they're there for. Plus, they really are delicious...
One may get a pass if it meets @CoturnixComplex 's criteria for her bunny project, but the others will be delicious. They are half Rex too, so they are pretty darn soft. I've got two more litters due at the beginning of June, one litter will be purebred Rex.

Yessss. They are looking so great! I probably will take one if there is a standout little buck. He would produce some rex-coated chinchilla and REW with potentially all three of my does! And be great when I don't want to deal with humongous babies.

Adorable and delicious.

What do you do with the pelts when you process the rabbits?
My SIL used to raise white rabbits for a medical research company....years ago...the company sent a truck to pick up the rabbits three times a year. She also had night crawlers raising in the rabbit droppings in shelves under the rabbit cages...and sold those to bait supply and fishermen.

Finally separating out the ducks for processing. Started last night and will finish selection this morning before letting the flock out.
All the rain and other projects this year put a delay on that until now....and a few of the drakes were getting too aggressive competing for the duck hens.
My docile drakes were taking their hens to the far reaches of free-range territory and were becoming hard to herd back to the coop for night lock-up.
Just moving 4 drakes to the other pen made a dramatic difference in the demeanor of the duck pen yesterday evening.

I'm going to try to tan them. I saved the pelts from the first batch we butchered, but haven't had time to work on them, so they are sitting in the freezer.

I thought it was only fair that I continue my research for Conan, especially after yesterday's shenanigans regarding the color and sparkle of my blood. You're WELCOME.

This is what I could find in my hunt for Swedish Flowers so far. Greenfire farms are in Fl. and ship day old chicks. Apparently they were the one of the first to breed them in the US (at least this is what the auction site I found them on claimed). In 2014, they imported unrelated bloodlines and are now selling the offspring.

Natural Ark is located in Colorado, so not as far from you as Florida, and they do not ship day old chicks. They are a few weeks old before they ship.

Meyer only has 63 available for May 13th and you can only order 3. Some reviewers claim that these are not actually Swedish Flower hens at all (Miller fleur leghorn perhaps). The question is regarding leg color, floppy combs and their 'flowers'. Although, I do know that they aren't bred for any specific color, i'm not qualified to verify their authenticity. However, if i'm going to order a fancy schmancy chicken, i'm probably not going to order from a giant hatchery like Meyer...

I think you should buy a couple from Greenfire AND Natural Ark...for research purposes. :old

Mine are packed in salt waiting for me to build my tanning racks. I want to try and use my quail eggs to do it! My partner sells little fire tools and I want to make pouches for magnifying glasses from them.

I throw away an abominable amount of potential compost at the moment. Have to get my basin-safe leak-proof bins made.
