Yea, not cheap for our pups either.
Try looking for some mobile vaccine clinics near you. They often sell preventative for cheap(er), but you have to provide proof of a recent heartworm test and preventative.
Most clinics provide discounts for buying in bulk. We usually bite the bullet and buy a year’s supply and often get a month or two for free.

I wonder if I could order it online? Maybe it would be cheaper? Don’t know if they’d give me a prescription or not though.

And wow that must be expensive! probably winds up being cheaper though.

Thanks again! Very helpful! Assuming giving a cat a pill is a lot different than giving a dog a pill?? Wouldn’t want to accidentally hurt her. But then again she is very docile and let’s me brush her teeth, clean her ears and eyes, trim nails, brush her out, etc. so she’d probably let me give her a pill too but topical’s probably easier. I wouldn’t want to stress her out.

You have to restrain them and basically pop it down their throat. They won’t take it in a treat.

He was not on a preventative, which is entirely our fault. We know his resting requirements.
The preventative can be taken 30 days after the original date and still be effective, so no need to worry about being a few days late.

There is now an injectible heartwork treatment that is good for either 6 months or 12 months. Depends on which shot is available and/or you choose. It does go by weight so I don't know how much it would cose for your dog but if that is something that interests you (do it and forget it for a yr type thing), you can always ask the vet about it. It's what I did for one of my dogs so far (the other 2 already have their meds bought).
It is called ProHeart12 (moxidectin).

My dogs never minded taking HeartGuard. They viewed the chews as treats and gobbled them right up. I can't speak for cats. I would think they are a bit more finicky. I wonder if the injectible kind is available for cats as well? I don't own cats so I have no clue. Would be interesting to look in to though.

Y'all.... I went outside to clean the coops and collect eggs etc. today and this what I found in my duck area.

My poor Xena looks like she's been in a fight, the poor girl! Female ducks moult also right? Not just the males (since their feathers change colors with spring and fall)? Totally normal? My goodness she looks rough! Should I bump up her protein?

I knew that the 6, which is just the 6month supply, wasn't offered any more but the 12month supply is being offered. I don't know the difference, other than coverage of time, between the 2.

ETA: That article was from back in 2004. I just noticed this. When I took my dog to the vet for her heartworm test and the Proheart12 was offered, the vet said they just started getting it in. That they used to have the 6month supply but they stopped doing that and went to the 12 month shot and that it even turned out cheaper to do so. That is just what I was told.

It just takes some practice. Some owners get squeamish when you restrain their pets.

Heartgard is a flavored chewable but some animals won’t eat it. If she likes it then go for it.

I’m sure you can buy it online but you cannot do the test at home...
