➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Dogs don’t generally kill birds out of hunger. They do it out of instinct. Prey drive. Unless very well trained and accustomed to being around poultry, most dogs will kill chickens if given half a chance. Mine would have but we made sure she never got the opportunity. It is on the owner for failing to properly contain two powerful dogs in a rural neighborhood.

That makes sense, didn’t really think of that. And most GSDs especially have a lot of prey drive. Also I think having more than one dog creates kind of a pack mind thing so I’m sure that’s probably part of it. Either way, it’s a shame the owner didn’t contain them and it’s a shame they didn’t care enough about them to want them back and/or try to keep them safe. :/ an dog yeah it is definitely 100% on the owner!! I was just meaning it wasn’t the dogs fault. Definitely the owner though. Still terrible though. Sorry about your birds. :hugs

My dog is a killer that would take down dozens of birds per hour, given the chance. She doesn't ever get the chance.

Yeah, I’m sure Franklin and Libby probably would too. But like you, they will never get the opportunity. I think most people keep their dogs contained or their chickens contained or both so this kind of thing doesn’t happen. I personally would never just let my dog run wild and if they did get loose, I’d go looking for them right away. And if I ever found out they ever did anything like this, I would feel so so awful about it and I would apologize to the owner(s) immediately and offer to pay for the birds (or whatever animal was attacked) or a vet visit or whatever!! And I’d pay whatever fees animal control was charging for them to get them back then make sure a fence was put up or fixed or that they were only put on leash and/or supervised or whatever. But my dogs/animals are also family. They’re not family to a lot of people so when the dog gets into some trouble, they just dump it and get a new one, it’s not worth it. Which is sad to me but it is what it is. Maybe these dogs will have a better life now. :fl

Well guys, I think I have confirmation on what killed all my birds. A neighbor two doors down just lost her entire flock of 25. But this time she caught the culprits: a pair of German Shepards. They went into her run through a weak spot in the roof, slaughtered the birds, then couldn’t get out.

I didn’t consider entry from above amidst all the structural damage to my run walls. But the dogs might have been able to get into my run that way. The damage to the walls could have been them breaking out from inside afterwards. My poor birds never stood a chance :hit
I’m glad they were caught but damn. That really sucks. I’m so sorry Bones. :hugs
Irresponsible owners ruin it for everyone, huh? What’s the bet they’ll get a new puppy now that they’ve surrendered their “difficult” dogs. :hmm
Did you take pictures the day that it happened? Is there any dog hair on the wire? Any way you can go after them as well?

Ive never had any of my dogs on heartworm pills and they have always been negative. But they were and are inside dogs. Its crazy how people react when i tell them theyre not on preventative. They think my dogs will surely die of heartworms. I can see the shock on theyre faces lol
Why don’t they get preventive?
Do you not understand how common and deadly the disease is, or do you just not care?

I have pictures of the damage to the coop and run and pics of Blossom’s wounds. There were prints in the mud that day too but I didn’t take pics. Honestly though I probably won’t go after them for compensation, simply because I don’t want to keep reliving the tragedy. Losing my birds absolutely wrecked me and even hearing about what happened today caused me to break down in tears. I just want to cuddle my lizards and try to move forward. But I hope our neighbor gets a lot of money out of them!

I understand. I think I’d want to just forget it ever happened too. :( :hugs

How is the little burrito? Does he like his new crib?

So far so good! Per breeder instructions, we are giving him his space so he can de-stress and settle in. But I have been peeking in at him from time to time. He seems to love his cozy, warm log hide. :yesss: But he has also done some exploring. He has been to the far end of the tank to explore his cool hide. He has found his water dish and had a drink. And he must have found his supplement dish too cause there are little foot prints in it :love We picked up some mealies for him today and are gutloading them now. Tomorrow he will have his first meal in his new home.

Well, I usually just put it in a treat lol

That doesn’t sound so hard! Although that said, the Heartgard ones look soft, like chewables, rather than a pill so maybe she would just eat it on her own?? She LOVES treats LOL

Maybe I can trick her.

And wait really? Practically everything is available online these days, surely pet meds would be too??

Luna loves treats so I wonder if she would eat the Heartgard ones.... they look like treats rather than pills.

And yeah, I might ask about that
Pet meds are available online but you still have to have a prescription from the vet.

Y'all.... I went outside to clean the coops and collect eggs etc. today and this what I found in my duck area.

My poor Xena looks like she's been in a fight, the poor girl! Female ducks moult also right? Not just the males (since their feathers change colors with spring and fall)? Totally normal? My goodness she looks rough! Should I bump up her protein?
I don't know a thing about ducks molting... Are you sure nothing tried to attack her?
