Dogs don’t generally kill birds out of hunger. They do it out of instinct. Prey drive. Unless very well trained and accustomed to being around poultry, most dogs will kill chickens if given half a chance. Mine would have but we made sure she never got the opportunity. It is on the owner for failing to properly contain two powerful dogs in a rural neighborhood.
That makes sense, didn’t really think of that. And most GSDs especially have a lot of prey drive. Also I think having more than one dog creates kind of a pack mind thing so I’m sure that’s probably part of it. Either way, it’s a shame the owner didn’t contain them and it’s a shame they didn’t care enough about them to want them back and/or try to keep them safe. :/ an dog yeah it is definitely 100% on the owner!! I was just meaning it wasn’t the dogs fault. Definitely the owner though. Still terrible though. Sorry about your birds.

My dog is a killer that would take down dozens of birds per hour, given the chance. She doesn't ever get the chance.
Yeah, I’m sure Franklin and Libby probably would too. But like you, they will never get the opportunity. I think most people keep their dogs contained or their chickens contained or both so this kind of thing doesn’t happen. I personally would never just let my dog run wild and if they did get loose, I’d go looking for them right away. And if I ever found out they ever did anything like this, I would feel so so awful about it and I would apologize to the owner(s) immediately and offer to pay for the birds (or whatever animal was attacked) or a vet visit or whatever!! And I’d pay whatever fees animal control was charging for them to get them back then make sure a fence was put up or fixed or that they were only put on leash and/or supervised or whatever. But my dogs/animals are also family. They’re not family to a lot of people so when the dog gets into some trouble, they just dump it and get a new one, it’s not worth it. Which is sad to me but it is what it is. Maybe these dogs will have a better life now.
