➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Yes they do. Some sleep lighter than others.
Not necessarily, it depends on your husbandry. Outdoor temps are irrelevant since the temperature of your tank should be constant.

Thanks again. I never knew all this stuff. Weird it’s not mentioned more often. And that makes a lot of sense! Thanks. This is probably a stupid question but is it hard to take care of them while they’re hibernating? Do you just like leave them alone? I’d be scared I’d kill it or something. I imagine a lot of new owners probably call their vet panicked and/or accidentally bury the animal?

If I had the room I’d raise alligators. Here you’re allowed to gather the eggs from a nest, hatch them and you’re required to release like 20% or something from the hatched clutch cause that’s what wildlife and fisheries figures actually makes it to adulthood. I’ve always liked alligators and hate to see them dead on the side of the road trying to cross or sunning

What would you do with the ones you kept? I hear they taste like chicken..

No, you just take them out for baths and let them sleep.
It can be hard to tell if they’re dying or just starting brumation if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I love alligators. They’re such cool animals and I think kinda misunderstood. They’re illegal here though. Probably for good reason. I don’t think I’d ever want one for a pet. They definitely can be dangerous but they’re cool animals.

:lau they say everything tastes like chicken lol

The mini prefers alligator meat over quail.

:th

It’s supposed to be really good! My parents apparently ate it all the time when they lived in Florida lol or at least my dad did.

Is it common in Texas? I imagine it’s kind of expensive?

I can see why he’d like alligator... it’s unique, different. I imagine most birds taste pretty similar?? Maybe not.

Thanks again! Very helpful.

And yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of!!

I’m glad I didn’t go out and buy one when I wanted to whenever that was recently cause I had no idea this was a thing.

Which is weird cause I’ve done a fair amount of research and watched a lot of videos, etc. but never seen it mentioned before. Even in that reptile guy’s videos.

That said, I did just find this article but I had to Google hibernation or something specific like that to find it, I don’t think it would have popped up in just regular searches for info/care.

Anyway, do you agree with it?

the meat is amazing. Tail meat to be specific. Battered and fried. Rib and leg meat is better cooked in a sauce piquant or something since it can get chewy
Tan the hides

That sounds delicious. :love :drool

So only certain parts are chewy? I was wondering about that because I had heard alligator meat was tough but wasn’t sure if that was true or not.
