@BantyChooks (or anyone else with an opinion) do you think it is a terrible idea to get a male chick at the same time I get the female chicks this year? I know it is recommended by many to get a female flock established before introducing a male...but I am impatient And I actually miss the crowing.

That is the most common way people end up with a rooster whether it is intentional or not. I have never started a flock without a cockerel already in it.

Ok, great! When I first started out with chickens, I chose to keep all females for the first couple years. I think that was a good strategy for a beginner. And the adult hens did a good job of "educating" my first cockerel. But now that I have actually experienced having a flock with a male in it, I am not sure I want to go back to just keeping hens. So thank you for the reassurance!

I don't see why not. Especially if you're planning on a little dude. I think it's the best way to do it!

Current plan is to order from Purely Poultry. For sexed bantam pullets you can choose from Barred Plymouth Rock, Buff Brahma, Dominique, Rhode Island Reds, Barred Cochin, Golden Laced Cochin, Red Cochin, Barred Old English Game, and Crele Old English Game.

We have not finalized our plans yet, but currently we are thinking of getting barred cochin, golden laced cochin, and buff brahma pullets as well as some unsexed silver duckwing OEGBs.

The minimum order for bantams is 15 total, so we could end up adding a few more breeds, but those are the ones we are most interested in currently.

Not forever, but maybe for this year. I want to someday get more legbars, orloffs, and faverolles. Someday. But my heart still hurts from losing my old flock, so just for this year I might go with all new breeds (and all new sizes!).

I love bantams. Big personality in little packages. I did manage to find my perfect chicken in the cream Brabanter, so I will always have a flock of them, but otherwise... BANTAMS. Speaking of which, if you want a fun, beautiful, super friendly, but tough bird, I can't recommend Brabanters enough.

Of course I say that now, but I know my MIL really wants some faverolles for her flock. And if we end up placing an order together (like we did last year), I may not be able to resist getting more faverolles of my own. We shall see.

Now there is an idea! I seriously considered getting some of those last year but ended up ordering orloffs instead. Definitely food for thought!
