I know.

I think I have maybe gotten a little bit lax cause the big girls have been so safe for years.

And I wanted the littles outside.

I thought they were safe too though. I made sure they were all safe inside the coop last night but I think it happened this morning. I think a hawk got him cause my mom saw one this morning that wouldn’t leave. It must have spooked him causing him to run into the back corner instead of inside the coop and then not be able to maneuver back out as it’s tight back there.

I feel like a total freaking idiot especially since we spent forever putting hardware cloth over the top and railroad ties along the sides where the fence was off the ground so nothing could get inside but I didn’t think to make sure the back corners were secure. I made sure they were safe at night but never would have guessed it would have nagged one during the day.

There is a bit of a feather trail too so I really think hawk tried to fly over, couldn’t get in cause of the HC but spooked Johnny enough to run into the corner, where the hawk then nabbed him but couldn’t eat him cause my mom came out. That or it was just scavenging a kill. Looked like something tried to pull a wing through the fence but his head was still attached.

In any event, I have now secured the corners temporarily and will be putting HC around them when I get home.

Oh no... Check for injuries. I had a few that died with no injuries.

I think a hawk got it somehow as my mom saw one out there this morning but I don’t really get how as I specifically put hardware cloth other the top so that wouldn’t happen. I guess it must have gotten it on the ground. I’ve secured it as best I can for now and will be buying some more hardware cloth to permanently wrap it when I get home.
