➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I use 2.5 gallon buckets and just set them on the ground. They don’t have any trouble drinking from them. Occasionally one will get tipped over, but they’re outside or in the deep Litter dirt floor greenhouse so it doesn’t matter. I have the one with the deicer in a plastic milk crate (those plastic storage baskety-kind-of cubes) so it can’t be tipped over.
Mine get buckets like that too. I buy them at the dollar store. I have 3 buckets like that then a 5 gallon bucket with 2 water cups.

We did have a chick fall in a bucket and die, but only happened that once

Mine love fermented feed. It’s easy—just soak the feed. It will eventually start to ferment and smell like rising bread dough. How long that takes depends on the temperature, but they like the soaked feed, fermented or not. If you leave a bit of the last batch in the bucket, it’ll ferment much faster.

Disadvantages: you have to soak it, it will freeze in the cold, it’s heavier to carry out
Advantages: adds probiotics, they waste much less, it is hydrating, they like it better (if accustomed to it), you feel like you’ve gone the extra mile for your birds

Thanks!! Both of these are very helpful. I read some article about fermenting once that said most of the stuff labeled “fermenting” were wrong and not actually fermented or whatever and it had to be done this special fancy complicated way or adding some special thing or something (they weren’t selling anything but idk remember what ingredient it was) so that kinda put me off from it. I’m thinking that person was wrong though. It said it didn’t have any of the benefits unless you did it their way

What color was the mold?

White is a yeast and just stir that in
Fuzzy black isn't good
In my signature is a FAQ that a member made and is how I do it
Black and fuzzy. When I do something, I do it right! :D

Suggested that I do it inside where it is cooler, but that isn't happening. Turns out the dogs like everything. If you saw the beasts, they'd swear we are starving them.

Appreciate the the link. I will review it later. No telling the chaos happening in the incubator at the moment.

I tried fermented feed and my chickens hated me 😂 I add oats to their feed though. Sometimes I'll do added herbs and such.
Get ya a 5 gallon bucket fill it about 1/3 full of race horse oats and fill it with water and put some type of lid or you'll have a bunch of dead floating flies in it. Piece of plywood or whatever stir it now and then after about 3 days its be good and soaked and swollen. Be warned it starts to smell rough but with mine the stinkier the better they loved it. I use an old strainer to scoop it out.

That's what happened to my last nipple water bucket and I had to make a new one. The bucket cracked because I had the nipples too tight.

These ones though are open waterers. Big heated dog bowl for the big girls and just a regular ceramic type bowl for the chicks. I need to get a different one for them but it was a fast replacement as their other waterer started leaking. It was just the cheap TSC plastic type.

I think they all just drink tons of water but

The big girls I swear go through like a gallon, gallon and a half, a day :th
Starlings empty water bowls and feeders quickly. That's why I put out some feed and water in the early morning and then top off as I lock up the pens.

The flies are extra protein! :lau :gig :lau :sick

I haven’t seen any birds in the pens but maybe they are stealthy! Was thinking maybe squirrels or rats or something drinking it too. But I also just have way more chickens now and I think I underestimated how much they drink haha
