➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I honestly agree with you on this. Chickens honestly just are chickens. Yeah there's different breeds and such but if you're not showing them there's no need to have certain breeds. Adding more chickens costs more and requires more work and responsibility.

They’re not to me though. To me they’re pets and all of mine have different names and different personalities. I like having different breeds because they all have different looks and vastly different personalities. And I really honestly don’t think chickens are that much work and I am already used to caring for tons of them so it wouldn’t be that different than now

Mine that live outside outside are pets and all have names. I spend most of the day with them, but I don't just buy from hatcheries and such due to the looks of them. If you want decent chickens, id look for local breeders. I bought mine from breeders at the local farm and created my flock. Now I breed for certain looks by mixing breeds.

This hatch I went for silver and actually achieved it thanks to HeiHei

True. I think that I’d eventually like to have 2-3 breeds, but for now there are so many! It’s hard to choose. That said, if you have more than you can use it stops being fun.

Yeah I’ll probably eventually narrow it down but then again maybe not because there’s a lot of breeds I like haha

And I suppose that’s true if they have a specific purpose, like eggs, or meat, or even show, but for me, all mine are pets so it’s still fun cause they’re all different.

I have 10 different breeds, but now I'm more into barnyard mixes because they're more unique.

I’m sure barnyard mixes are fun but nobody really has them around here and I like to cut the middle man and get them directly from a hatchery anyway. That way I know what I’m getting and where they’ve been and stuff.

Although if I keep a rooster I would probably hatch out my own barnyard mix chicks.

Good to know. I paid $35 @ for the geese and $15 for the gander at the feed store (special order), so that actually sounds like it might be in the ball park for unsexed. I’m not sure that (as a private party) I could command that kind of cash, but then I wouldn’t need to. I’d like to hatch goslings, but I don’t know that I want more geese. Not sure about eating them. I’ve never had goose. I suppose someone online knows how to cook one...
The gal I got mine from is a friend, and she says that they are truly delicious, but they're so sweet that she has a hard time killing them.
If you're up for the task, sexing them is fast and easy. I sexed mine to make sure I got a pair.

Middle man? If you buy from the breeder you are getting it from the man.

That makes sense! I got mine for personality and egg laying abilities too, not only looks, but breeders are a good option too. I only went with hatcheries because they were sexed and also easier/faster to get than breeders. Plus cheaper. And the eggs I just wanted to try hatching. But now that I’ve hatched as well as gotten straight run, I could probably go to a breeder Since I wouldn’t mind straight run now but then again I got a lot of roosters with my hatch and that kind of put me off of straight run.

That’s awesome you got silver!! I want to try breeding my own chickens but I feel like that’s even more stupid than buying a few more so I probably won’t do that.

If I did, I’d want to keep them all, which I definitely don’t have the room for, so I don’t think I should.

Hm yeah that’s true. I’m not really sure what I meant with that part 😂🙈

I guess I was thinking maybe older chicks or feed store ones? But breeders would come directly from the breeder so idk what I meant haha

Although actually wait. I think I meant like they hatch and get shipped immediately and haven’t been raised near other birds or eating different food or whatever. So not really middle man but like younger I guess.

Although I guess most breeder chicks are pretty young too? And probably better quality?

But it’s just easier for me too to get from a hatchery and just drive to the post office or get directly from a feed store rather than finding someone’s house or whatever
