I had a duck hen hatch and brood her own clutch but that’s as close as I’ve gotten to hatching. What if it doesn’t break her of needing to be a momma hormones? So many questions I have lol! My hubby is not exactly happy with the idea but I really don’t want to go through the broodiness roller coaster. I am hoping if she gets babies, she will be done for the rest of the year. I know some birds, especially Silkies, are known for being habitually broody but I’m hoping she won’t be. I’m a over thinker and planner. It’s how my brain is wired. Plz bear with me lol! I think it would depend on when you can get the chicks. If you can get them after she has set a week, she should be determined to be a momma but won't have lost as much body condition from setting. If you slip the chicks under her at night with a red light or very minimal light so she can't see the chicks, she should hopefully take them without issue since they will talk to each other all night. Remember to remove the dummy eggs she's sitting on when you add the chicks so she thinks they hatched. Definitely check on them or set up a camera so you know if you need to intervene.

She should be done with setting if she accepts the chicks, at least until they are grown. Then it's possible she will go broody again.

My experience has been once the chicks become cockerels and pullets, about 1/ 2 the size of Momma. Momma is sick of them and can't get away from them quick enough. It's usually next year before they become broody again. Most of mine are Marans. Hope that helps
 
Squatch is being rehomed today, he's too big for our flock and we can't get big enough females for him at this time. He's becoming aggressive while mating and we made the choice last night as a family. I'll miss him.

We got 2 new roosters they should be here tomorrow or Saturday. We named them Ozzy & Dio. They're Deathlayers. We have 20 females so they should be set. They're very docile and sweet.
