They normally don't ever get on the counters, much less the stove. They're upset because everything is changing around them.

I just brought all of the cats with me into one of the finished rooms. I just moved my computer in here. I almost didn't find Scraps. He threw himself away. I found him inside a garbage bag.
 
Many years ago, I had a cat named Moonrise who didn't understand hot at first. She was still a kitten, and I was baking something. I opened the oven, and before I could stop her, she jumped up onto the oven door! I heard little sizzle noises each time she landed as she hopped across the stove. She never did it again, thank goodness, but I felt so bad for her burned little paws!

I was going to say, They only do it once. (Unlike humans.)
