Amy was pulled back before she could say anything, for which she was surprisingly grateful. "Layla, it's fine. These people come in all the time, because believe it or not, lots of people like coffee. Besides, I've got a feeling that this will turn out all right," she argued. She turned to go back out but stopped when  she saw Jaxson talking to a couple who had just come in. "You go see how you can help them," she quickly instructed Artemis, " and I'll deal with him."

Artemis sighed, knowing that Amy had ended the discussion. Obediently she went, and helped the couple order a early lunch, while cautiously keeping her voice low, hoping Jaxson wouldn't recognize it.

Jaxson looked up as Amy reappeared from the back. "Hi," he said, instantly criticizing himself for such a lame greeting.

Amy felt herself stiffen all over; a moment she had dreaded but equally longed for and she couldn't think of anything to say. She watched Artemis go greet the customers before asking, "Why are you here?" In what she hoped wasn't too demanding of a voice.

"I've heard the coffee is good here," Jaxson offered lamely. "And, mainly, because I wanted to see you," he then added in a quieter tone. "I know this must be somewhat of a surprise, since it's been so long. But I had hoped that time would have healed what happened."

Amy studied his face in an attempt to read beneath what he was saying, but there was nothing to read; he seemed genuine about what he was saying. "You've had seven years to come," she said solemnly. "Why now?"

"Because the time wasn't right," Jaxson said softly. "After your father..." he trailed off, then wisely decided to switch the subject. "There was no way for me to contact you under Nessie and your mother's watch. I heard from your sister that you had moved out of the city, then I saw you that one day. I still have the paper you gave me. I came, so many times, but something prevented me from coming through that door." He knew he was blubbering but he had to say something, anything, to let Amy know that she wasn't purposely cut off.

Amy dabbed at her eyes with the edge of her sleeve, then refused to meet his eyes. She fingered the kitchen towel nervously as she listened. "Does Vanessa know you're here?" She asked immediately after he finished.

(Will he see Artemis? :D )
Artemis cautiously watched Amy speak with the man she labeled as dangerous from across the room after having served the couple. She understood instantly by the way they interacted that this wasn't the first time they saw eachother. Amy had withheld information from Artemis. Why? Artemis had told her personal details about herself, but know realized that her friend had lied. And now, because of it, they were both in danger.

(why yes, of course. not to say that he'll recognize her though XD)

Jaxson hung his head a bit now and there was a lull in the conversation before he answered. "No, she doesn't. I can't stay long because I promised I'd help her with an early dinner, and you know how she is with time," he said a little louder than he meant.

"How is she?" Amy managed to ask, keeping a steady voice.

"She's changed, as have we all since then," Jaxson replied. "She's seemed more bitter about it than the two of us, oddly enough. Still won't talk to me much about it." He shrugged. He looked up slowly at Amy but her attention had strayed to a group of people that had just come in.

Despite looking disinterested, Amy was listening to every word. Amy knew where Vanessa's bitterness was coming from but she didn't think now a good time to tell Jaxson. "I'm really sorry, but I have to attend these people," she said honestly. Artemis was new to this and a crowd may stress her out.

Jaxson, understanding, said, "I need to go anyway, but if it's okay with you, I can come back? Maybe tomorrow?"

Amy nodded and found herself saying, "Please do," before going to serve the customers. "Layla, I've got this if you'll go put the remaining muffins away," she told Artemis.
