🆘SOS🆘 MITES ON DAY OLD CHICKS AND BROODY HENS 😡

I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. Sounds awful! I would strongly recommend against the use of DE especially now. It will not kill the mites at this point and could cause respitory distress in both mom and chicks. I would spray mom directly with some permethrin spray. And I’m so sorry but I can’t remember which one to use. I think @Kiki knows and has pictures of it. Good luck!

How have you made out so far? Poultry dust will help. It has permethrin in it. Put the dust in the nest box and you can dust mom and the chicks. Good luck...
Here is a chart another BYC member made for the different permethrin solutions. I use the 0.5% mixture and it works well. Many people make the mistake of not mixing it strong enough to take care of the problem and therefore then decide it doesn't work. Good luck...

Would love to hear an update. Your infestation sounds very severe, so I agree with everyone on using Elector PSP. If you want something more natural in the future elemental sulfur is a great preventative and kills mites at the first sign of them. You can usually find 10 pound bags for 20 bucks, lasts me the whole year, just add to nest boxes, the coop itself and to dust baths. A research article also found good results from hanging sulfur bags near the feed source so the chickens have to brush against it. No signs of mites after 2 weeks.

We battled mites all year last year, and Elector PSP was the only thing that got rid of them. We lost a chick to them and almost lost a second chick, had to nurse it back to health because it was so anemic. I hope your chick is doing okay!
Yes! The chicks are doing fine!! And the only thing that I found that worked IMMEDIATELY was the Sevin dust! As soon as I put alittle on the mommas the little creepy crawlers started dying as soon as it touched them! And as the chicks ruffled under the mommas the dust fell onto them and killed their mites too! They are all doing extremely well and growing quickly!!

Hi! Sorry for the delayed response!! The mommas and babies are doing wonderful! The product that showed immediate results for me was the Sevin dust! I had to do something very quickly because mommas and babies were looking pretty anemic even after giving them cooked red meat and spinach 😔 so I lightly dusted the mommas backs, butts and under wings and as the babies ruffled under the hens they were lightly colored and within 10-20 min all of the mites were lifeless! I was amazed! My local stores didn’t have the Elector and I was nervous about spraying the mommas and babies with a wet substance like mixed Permitherin so I had to think quick and bought what was available at the time. Even though Sevin dust was put on a “do not use for poultry” list in about 2018 I took a risk and thankfully it worked in everyone’s favor!
