so out of the second incubator I have 7 out of 11 Wheaten Marans, 6 out of 7 WM x EE and 3 out of 4 Leghorn crosses. so a total of 16 out of 22 that went into lockdown and 16 out of a total of 36 set.. not a great hatch this batch but I can't complain as I at least got some. the Welsummer eggs are all still looking good

Day 14 for this batch, can someone tell me if the air cells are the right size? Or at least close. It’s the dark green line. I’ve been keeping the humidity at 40-45%.

Just had a hawk fly by but it wasn’t a very big one and I think was just flying by but idk. Momma was FREAKING OUT. So loud lol hawk was probably scared of her babies were good and stayed hidden. They only came out when she started doing her soft gentle calls instead of alarm calling. and even then they’re still mostly hidden.

Oh and also the OG mama quit like a week or two ago so the Auntie that I’ve mentioned before has taken over completely she’s also a far better mother but don’t tell Freckles I said that

Second of my homegrown duckies hatched. mama duck is sitting on 3 more, due sometime mid September (not 100% sure when she truly started setting so... lol) the egg I had to go searching for the head didn’t make it - not sure what was wrong but it wasn’t breathing well even after I got it’s bill free so maybe it just was too far gone already but this one and the first are doing really well!

They so often don't make it after helping—and when they do, they often die later or fail to thrive. It's sad, and there's nothing wrong with giving a little help. I would probably avoid breeding that bird in future though, just to be safe.

Very rarely for sure. My magpie was a troublemaker at hatch but he’s fine now, but he’s the only one from all my hatches this year that’s survived and thrived after helping.

I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt and will see what happens with the eggs she’s sitting on... not sure if it’s my fault or not but I didn’t calculate dates properly and she was still within the withdrawal period for antibiotics. since some drugs can cause repro issues or problems with babies in other species, I’m wondering if there’s a correlation. These eggs she’s on now were laid after the withdrawal was completed so I’m hoping that was the problem... she is, of course, my favorite, lol, so I wanted a daughter from her.
