🐣🐄Black Copper Marans and Whiting True Blues. Lots of videosšŸŽ„

The 2 black chicks are doing well despite being rejected by the broody. They spend part of the day free ranging near the other chicks and the other half in the brooder with each other. They seem to be bonded to each other and could care less about following the hen.

Here’s the mama marans teaching the chicks to how to turn a yard into a desert.

And the 2 outcasts doing their own thing.

Well it’s been awhile since I’ve updated anything about the flock. We had a number of chicks disappear to predators. When they were just a week or so old a few went missing then a couple more. 9 chicks over a week or so got whittled down to 2! I think they started getting through the fence and the hen couldn’t follow them and a cat or hawk took them. I did trap about 4 possums and a coon in the first week and then nothing went missing after that.
Here are the 2 survivors. The light colored one is an obvious cockerel and I think the other one is a boy too. They’re eating some yogurt with their surrogate mother. She just went back to roosting in the coop last night. I think the chicks are 9 weeks old.

Sorry to hear about your loss... The chicks are getting big, I like that last pic of them with Magic.

New Year's update.
All Chickens are doing well. No more casualties since the loss of the young whiting chicks. the 2 survivors from that clutch are young cockerels, about 5 months old now.
The back and front yard has been totally depleted of grass since about October and the birds have been jumping the fence to graze in the neighbors yards. No complaints from the neighbors, but it drives me mad.
So, I trimmed the primary feathers from their wings and it has pretty much curbed their trespassing.
Only 1 hen has been molting and not laying regularly. Right now I'm getting about 7 eggs a day from 12 hens. I've been very tempted to hatch a bunch of eggs.

Long time no hear from, my friend. Good to hear all is well except for a incoming trespass charge...🤣

Beautiful colors you have for eggs. I've got an Olive now added to my collection. Need more....šŸ¤—

Thanks, that's Pepper. The only crested bird to come out of that fibro hatch. I'm guessing she's got Legbar and Ayam Cemani genetics. She was one of the main trespassers. Once I trimmed the wings they have been good about not venturing off the property. I have 4 black sisters, Pepper, Piper, Poppy and Petra. Each has small differences in combs and face color.
