A well waxed paddle should not be affected by the weather. Have you tried ski or surfboard wax on your paddle ?

No.. that won't prevent shrinkage .. ya need something waterproof for that..

Doesn't the paddle slip out of your hand ? Try warming the ski wax before applying.
