This little one feathered out quickly, was grey and pencilled with a white/light head so I figured it was a dark Brahma bantam like the other chick I got, who was and is clearly a young roo. I was sure she was girl since she feathered totally differently and seemed text book. In the past couple weeks SHE has gotten more dark and light splotches, and her comb is getting pink. She is almost 7 weeks. Help!

hmm... yes, it looks like a young dark brahma rooster. i had a dark brahma rooster that matured very slowly. sometimes they surprise you like that. the dead giveaway is the pointy hackle/saddle feathers with the white lacing thats starting to emerge from the baby plumes. theyre good roosters though. very docile. if you can keep them, youll love them.

Crap. That's what I thought. The other very obvious one is still feathering in, was bald FOREVER and came in black white and RED on chest shoulders and wings. Amazing how the same breed can feather completely differently and still both be boys! I am guilty, I totally counted my chickens to early. Lol. We already have a roo who is a sweetheart, a white Silkie so I doubt we will want any more but I have fallen in love with these babies. Whoops!

that's a bummer. and yeah, it is really strange! that's what you get from hatchery babies though.... inconsistent breeding. but yeah, see how they mature.. they may be a a nice addition to the family, or maybe not. it's kind of a toss up with these guys because they can be gentle giants, or big bullies.

I am not worried about inconsistency since they are just our backyard egg layers. :). We pick breeds we want to try and see what happens. No breeding or showing or anything. :) thanks for the confirmation. Daffodil will need a new name, the kids will like that job, then we will see what happens. Plenty of time to get to know them before we make any decisions. :)

i dont worry about that either, its just kind of lame to be surprised with a boy you were convinced was a girl all along lol. good luck with your little fellas. i can tell theyre in good hands.

It is TOTALLY lame! Our silkie rooster had me hoping it was a girl right up until the morning he crowed as I was walking away. Lmao. :)
