(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Thank you all. The breeds I am leaning towards are Wyandottes, Cochin, Orpington, Barred Rock, Brahma and Bantam (spelling?). I plan on having just hens and no roosters and that is why I plan on going with chicks and not eggs to hatch. So far the only wildlife I have seen in the area are deer and black bear.

YOO HOOO NEIGHBOR! LOL!
Yes, theres loads more critters wanting to eat your chickens around here. Proper protection is paramount.
I get my chickens from a local breeder that I totally trust. If you accidentally get a cockerel in the mix he will swap you for a pullet. I have Silver Laced Wyandotte, Buff Orpingtons, a Lavender Orpington cockerel (I love him, hes a P.I.T.A. but I couldn't trade him. Breeder still gave me a free pullet to make up for his mistake), Barred Rock, and a gorgeous Easter Egger. I'll be getting more. My breeder will raise your chicks to the point where they can be outside and safely on their own in whatever weather is current. I'd be happy to reccomend him to you when you're ready. I'd be happy to help you get started better than I did. I've learned so much here. Everyone here gives great adviice and help from experience. Since I'm in your locale I can help with things like weather and predetors and anything else I've learned. Thats what BYC Neighbors are for.
:welcome glad to see you here!

Lots of night time predators are shy--you often do not see them until they get into the coop

Welcome! I would seriously think about getting coop first while deciding on breeds. I started with pre-fab but wishing I took more time to build own coop. Check other coops and lessons learned on BYC coops.
welcome!
my lesson learned...get a larger coop FIRST. it will save you money and aggravation in the end. I read this lesson time and time again on BYC and i didn't heed it. :he
i too started with a prefab. i wasn't sure chickens would be for me. I came under the influence of CHICKEN MATH...it' s real!!! Each breed is more beautiful-and then there is frizzles and sizzles...and various interesting mixes. You can have a RAINBOW of eggs. And...chickens can have an amazing personalities! Now I'm trying to build a coop that can house the maximum amount of chickens for my property (which is 8).
good luck and enjoy-chickens are great!

Welcome! This site is a great resource!
I will confirm the chicken math attack, lol! I recently decided that I would get 4-6 chicks. Then I ordered an incubator and hatching eggs. I designed a coop/run for 4-6 large hens. As this was going on, my excitement continued to rise. I realized that I would not be happy with only 4-6. So I have redesigned my coop/run to easily accommodate 20. I have 11 chicks currently, all less than 2 weeks old, and more hatching eggs on the way!
