So I went out to collect my eggs yesterday and I found this very thick shelled wrinkly egg in the nest box from my Pullet Golden Laced Wyandotte, she has been laying for about 6-7 weeks ... and in that time she has laid 3 HUGE eggs.... doubler yolkers I'm guessing... I can't bring myself to crack them open......

I remember seeing pictures of eggs like this before on BYC.... So I was about to come up to look it up but needed to put food in coop for my broody...

When I looked in the coop I saw this egg on the floor of the coop ....

It is hard to tell from the picture but it has no shell .... the yolk is just covered by the membrane!! As she seems to have a few assembly line kinks will they work themselves out??? She has laid a normal egg again today .....

Here is a picture of the 2 eggs next to each other for better contrast....

They are given oyster shell and layer feed as well as yogurt & dark leafy greens ..... Her shells are usually very hard!!!

What do you all think???

Thanks!!

Had one with no hard shell the other day. It was weird. Give mine scratch and layer pellets also never seen it befor.

She still has some kinks being worked out. My guess on this kink was that the first egg hung up in the shell forming department holding the second on up. When the second one went through the wasn't enough calcium in the system. She had enough time to restock for the next days.

Read in a book when they have wrinkles it's from cracking inside. Don't know how true it is.

i dont htink thats true

the shell is the last thing before laying so how can more shell form over cracking

and it cant create over craked membrane as membraine dont crack it ruptures ands then thats that for the egg

I found on another thread here that the wrinkling happens when an egg gets held up in the shell coating area and then the next egg comes along to get a shell and they squish together... as the shell has not hardened yet .... usually a double yolker. I haven't cracked my wrinkled egg yet but as I also had the one with no shell I am not sure this will have 2 yolks.... I did get another big egg from this hen today....

perhaps she needs a higher calcuim intake. Ground oyster shells are a great source of calcuim and they aren't expensive. Hey is that a hatching chick in your avatar!

Thanks it has nothing to do with the calcium.... they have oyster shell get yogurt etc etc .... she is definitely working out some assembly line kinks!! She laid another huge double yolker .... ooh I just got a scale I need to start weighing them.
