Welcome to our chicken loving family!
I would love to rescue elderly chickens, or battery hens. You are doing a wonderful thing!
The British hen welfare trust remove the hens set for slaughter at 78 weeks by the battery hen farmers. This is when the chickens come into their first moult and are deemed non viable. Any hens removed, usually 20,000-50,000 at a time not rescued within 24 hours are culled. We can’t save them all, I wish we could. Tony

That makes me so sad :( I can’t even understand who would want to treat their chickens cruelly.

I live in the United Kingdom and Im a father and a grandfather and I’m a retired baker of 27 years I’m now indulging full time in my life’s passion of chickens. I have around 70 chickens mostly elderly (6 and a half years old) I’ve rescued over the years. Current Breeds are bovine goldline (brown egg layers) white leghorns with some Cuckoo Maran,s and a few Blackrocks. I currently have 4 chickens sitting on a total of 44 eggs due to hatch out from August the 9th 2018 and my incubator is set ready to receive 48 amber white eggs. I have a small plot of land and chickens are my passion. I’ve attendend several courses on chickens and hold certificates in chicken welfare and management. I’ve learned many tips and tricks over the years from some experts in chicken keeping. If i can freely offer any advice on any aspect of chicken keeping you only need ask.
Welcome :welcome, and I'm confident you'll find answers for some of your own questions along the way.
