1 month old silkies - one has shredded wings, the others don't...

How cute but like you said its the size of the egg they came in. Glad you found a bigger box. We went to an appliance store and turned a double wide refrigerator box on its back, cut off the top and raised the first batch for 5 weeks in it. It got so dusty and stinky we had to move them out to the outside brooder and turned on heat there. remember week 1 85 degrees, week 2 80 degrees, week 3 75 and so on until they are fully feathered out at 7 weeks. At 5 weeks we put them out all day to get used to the weather and at night brought them back in in a cat carrier and put them in the inside sleeper for the night. Cheers

Peepblessed, sorry to confuse you! I meant to say that I have 6 one-month-old chicks.

Here's their (slightly larger) home. They will be moving to a bigger box as soon as I find one, and they have a mini outdoor coop waiting (I don't want to put them in with the big girls until they are significantly bigger!).

I started checking leg colors and feathers and counting toes, and I think these are definitely silkie mixes. The farm I bought them from assured me that mom was a silkie, but most of the babies have few silkie traits. They mostly have hard feathers on their wings, yellow feet (with varying degrees of feathering), and four toes. So here they are!

One of the yellow chicks:

Little orange baby (color a little washed out by the flash - look for the color in the group shots)

(not actually a split wing, she was just wiggling a lot...)

One of the babies looks much more like a silkie. Shredded wing feathers, 5 black toes, black beak, etc.

Here are some group shots. I tried not to use the flash so their colors would show, so I apologize for the fact that some of these are pretty dark!

(this one shows the orange color better - mom was truly bright orange, and hopefully this baby will be, too!)

I guess we'll see what they look like when they grow up! Looking at the pictures, the combs aren't right, either, are they? I mean, I don't really care if they're pure-breds or not - I just got them because my RIRs, Marans, etc. don't like being petted by the kids next door and I wanted some chicks that I could raise to be a bit friendlier with the kids. Right now I'm just really hoping that most of them turn out to be hens, since I can't keep roosters where I live! Thanks so much for all of the help and info!

Is that enough pictures for you?

I'm a proud chicken mommy, and just like any mommy I'll gladly bore you to death with baby pictures!

Yeah, I have to admit that they are pretty cute... I may have spent an hour um, socializing them, this evening... They are turning into quite the little cuddle bugs!!
