1 YEAR OLD FEMALE BLACK LAB, HASN'T BEEN SPAYED..HELP!!!!!!!

We live in north west tennessee.
Down South. not much around here. I live in a town where the tallest point is the top of the methodist church steeple. Maybe the gash station sign??

Anyway, I agree, she needs TONS more running around time!! As far as getting her fixed,...it may be awhile, we also have 4 cats that need it, 80$ a piece for them,
105$ for Liberty. We could do it, but how can we get her to the vet safely???

Yes please repeat training every day that you can..The more the better. Do you have a dog crate that she will fit in that you can put in the back of a truck or SUV or the back seat of a car? Between you and your dad you should be able to wrestle her into it. If you have to attach two leashes to her one for you and one for him just get her to the place then ask them what to do when you get there. They may come out to your car and sedate her or give her something. I just have the feeling you need to do whatever you have to to get her in there because pretty soon its going to be too late and she is going to be Prego. Dogs will go to astonishing lengths to breed and be bred when the Pheromones start to fly. If she is a year old she is proabably ready. 7-8 months is the max I go before spaying a female dog. If the dog is in heat when you bring her in to spay its gonna cost more..and if shes prego its gonna cost even more than that, just take that into consideration.

We don't have a crate. I'm not sure she would stay in one if we had one. If she where to get out while we were on the way to the vet,,.... Oh, well, I guess it's worth a try, (sigh) we've been through ALOT with this pup.

thanks, M.P.

Crates are designed so that they cannot get out of them. They are sturdy and have locking mechanisms. I dont think she would be able to get out. I have put everything from geese to Goats to my large dogs in my crate and i've never had anything that could get out. You may be able to find a used crate for inexpensive on Craigslist in your area. Also Join the Yahoo Group Freecycle and do a "In search of" looking for a large to x large dog crate to take your pet to the vet. There may be someone in your area that has one who will see that and answer the ad. Also sometimes your local animal shelters or humane societies have these for sale for small donations. I know the ones in my area sell the things that are brought in or donated to them that they dont need or can use. Im just trying to think of ways you can get on. Thats the safest way to transport her. I think the solid plastic ones with have the door on the front are the safest most sturdy. Being that its solid exept for peek/ air holes and the door it keeps them more calm. If you were closer to me I would let you borrow mine. I would even be more than happy to help you get her there. Heck I would be more than happy to help you train her too. I think this is your best avenue to take now. Good luck.

A tired dog is a happy dog!

Do you have a pond? A creek or baby pool? Play fetch everyday and throw a ball in the water. Or take her for a really long walk. Keeping her in a kennel will not teach her anything. Labs have a really long puppy stage- just keep her busy.
There shouldn't be any reason to have to put the little ones & kittens in the house- labs are one of the best family breeds you can get. Walk her around the chickens with her leash on- so she gets used to them.

Having a female spayed doesn't help much to calm them down. Sometimes it keeps males from wandering- sometimes not. She's still young enough to get a handle on things- please don't give up!

WOW where are you located. My DD trains dogs for 4-H obedience and showmanship she has done wonderful with some pretty hard headed dogs. I would LOVE for her to have a go at this fireball. My MIL had a dog that would jump all over you when you walked in the door. 3 days of training and she now scootches to your feet and WANTS to jump but does not! Send me a PM I am serious!

Also- we've had great success with the harness leashes- they go around the dogs chest. The make a strong dog easier to walk/train. It might help keep her on a tie out too. I don't know how much they cost- but if you have a local co-op it shouldn't be too expensive.

Do you have a mobile vet near you? We are in SE Tennessee- there is a vet that works out of Crossville that travels all over doing low-cost spaying. They come to you!

We thought about a harness to tie her ou on, but my Dad figured she'd chew it off. She's already gone through 4 collars. How do I get her to know to walk on my left side and keep WALKING and not all the sudden bolt?!?

Nice to hear from another Tennessee'an!
