1 year old hen can't walk-possible injury? Update- broken pelvis.

poor thing... she does sound miserable.
There is just simply no way of knowing if injury or such without radiographs and such from a vet.
Patience and keep her hydrated (ya on the kefir!) ... you can get baby parrot/bird formula from a pet store and mix that in with her feed to concentrate the nutrition (mix it up with ater to the consistency of a porridge and mix in with her feed) ...

She's been eating the baby parrot food a bit this 2 days- I'm already hand feeding a roo with a broken beak...so it's here and ready.

Can't seem to catch a break right now!

I don't know about the crop not emptying unless there is something else blocking it from going down. Green poo is a sign of not much food going through, as there is excess bile in the poo making it green. Not enough poo to dilute the green color of the bile - make sense?

Well, here's the latest:

I had to talk to the vet about the roo and his beak (got a new prosthesis built for his lower beak) and brought up my girl. He agreed that it could be more than one thing and said he'd euthanize her for free if she was suffering, if I thought it needed to come to that. That was a week ago.

I've kept her in a super-deep, ultra-cushy dog bed that my gremlin-dog rejected, and she's been eating ok and drinking. I've not had an egg, and continued to be concerned about that.

Monday I took her to the vet, having decided I needed to know if she was eggbound or an internal layer- I couldn't bear the idea of her having that pain to deal with in addition to what I though must be an injury. I never did get any eggs from her this whole week and a half she's been down.

The vet took an X-ray, and she (would you believe there are 2 chicken vets at our office??) declared there isn't any egg in the system, and that we likely are dealing with a broken pelvis. It was very difficult to see, and they had radiologist look at it, who confirmed that diagnosis.

I am to keep her comfy and as normal as possible and wait to see if she heals. She is seemingly happy, and appears to be doing okay. I'm going to nurse her this way for a month before moving in any sort of direction, as I hope she will heal.

Has anyone ever dealt with this, or heard of such? Does anyone have any idea how long it may take for a year old chicken to heal a non-compound fracture in a pelvis?

Would you believe she gimps out of the dog bed to poo? I gotta tell you Georgie is a wonderful bird.

Being a newbie to chickens - I feel you! At first I was thinking - for a Chicken! But I would TOTALLY do it too! Praying Georgie heals up and gets lots of special attention while she is "down." She is going to be SPOILED!

LA- Thanks, she is going to be spoiled! Not having to fight the others for special treats like watermelon rinds! What a wonderful world she gets to experience.

All of my 20 chickens are spoiled- and they all act like lap dogs because of it. I can't help it- my empathy bone is overgrown!

You are a very good egg CC/Renee

In people, they say full weight bearing is discouraged for three months, although my experience is that it takes perhaps half that for the discomfort to pass, and the real discomfort lasts only a week or two. I would expect these time frames to be considerably less in a chicken, of course.

Thanks, DDawn- I wouldn't have thought about it. I'll try to keep er in check more than maybe her comfort level does naturally.
