10 Baby Wood Ducks (1st thought they were Mallards)

Pics
Just snuck this picture. Most of the food (egg mixture) in the black jar lid is now gone, and the duckweed I gave them a few hours ago is mostly gone too. They *might* actually be eating the duck starter mash. Not 100% sure. Sometimes they just walk all over it and squish it down. <LOL>

Here's an interesting quirk. They recognize the black jar lid as a source for food. If I put the egg mix on a white lid, they don't eat as much. I might add some duck starter mash alongside the egg mixture on the black lid and see what happens.

The 2 Blue Orpingtons, 2 Buff Orpingtons, and probably the 2 Black Australorps.

I love this little brown one.

Not sure about this girl, and I have another "black" one. So, I'm thinking the brown in above pic, this girl, and the 3rd black are my Easter Eggers and unknown spare. LOL!

I had another breed ordered (2 chicks) but they weren't available, so I opted for the Easter Eggers.

They are so precious! I have had Black Austrolorps they are really nice birds great layers. I have 3 EEs left out of 8 and they are 8 yrs old and 2 still lay once in a while. Love them all those little Orps and that little brown one are adorable too. All look very healthy.

Those wood ducks are looking great! Have you see that PBS special about the wood ducks leaving the nest 30' up in a tree, that was such an awesome show.

Thanks! I can't get enough of them, and that little brown one with jowl feathers or something. So sweet! They are all eating, drinking, and pooping with gusto. I'm keeping a close eye on them. <smile>

My bird-photographer friend was telling me about the Woods' nesting habits, and he and another photographer have installed nesting boxes on our island. I'll see if I can find that PBS special.

The babies are loving the pond water and duckweed. My bucket is nearly spent, so I'm planning on going out today to get some more. It's also a nice warm day with the sun shining, so I'm hoping to get them into their *pools* again. It's good for them to be outside. Their appetite is good, and they are finishing the food I leave for them. I'm going to try to mix a little duck starter mash in with their egg mix.
