I have the mother of the local Italian restaurant owner on my client list he tells me the mark up on a pasta dish is about 300% (depending on the dish)

Many times I don't even look at the bill just hand over my debit card. Yesterday I met my daughter and her friend's children for breakfast. When I got the bill I noticed that a 15% tip had already been added. We had two small kids with us, and in my opinion she earned it so I actually added a couple extra bucks.

So far I have not seen an additional 10% addition for carry out of any kind. I do usually tip a little if I call ahead, but not if it is a family owned and operated businesss for the same reason as mentioned about... the 300% markup.

Also, I agree that I would not go back there, but before I left would definitely ask to speak to the manager or owner to tell them what I thought of their surcharge for taking home the leftovers from the meal I had already paid for. I realize that times are tough all over this country, but this is not how you get repeat customers!

That policy comes under the heading of penny wise, pound foolish. I eat out a lot, and I have never heard of such a thing. Not for the take out and not for the doggy bag. I think if it were me, I would have paid, told them politely that I would not be back, and told they might want to consider how much that policy costs them in repeat business.

On the hairdresser, unless she owns the salon, she isn't making $35 to cut your hair. The price is set by the onwer and the h airdresser pays rent dor using the space. At some places, the hairdreeser makes less than 20% of that.

I can see the tip on takeout orders. The same server who makes $3.00 an h our + tips has to take time away from dine-in customers (and their tips!) To fill your order and have it ready. An automatic tip on doggie bags is a bit excessive. I know most servers would rather just make minimum wage, but I doubt that will change any time soon.

If you asked why they started this policy the answer would be simple. Too many customers who come in, take a long leisurely chat, take the food h ome and never leave a tip. It's a double injury to the waitstaff. They bust their butts keeping the glasses full with free refills and then get nothing. In the amount of time I've seen some people chat, a server could have had 3 or 4 tables that might leave a tip.

That is also the reason that an automatic tip is added to large parties. They take up a lot of space and require a lot of attention and then you have only 2 or 3 people that leave a tip on the amount that they ordered personally and the rest of the group leaves nothing.

We eat out a fair bit and I've never seen a place charge for a doggy bag. I can see why they add a tip for take out orders or large parties though.

I do tip the espresso places but it is not forced and the girls there are usually freindly and polite and deserve a tip. IMO I decide who gets a tip or does not or I eat elsewhere.

I'm glad that I'm not the only person who thinks that is a bad policy. If I do decide to go back, I will make sure I bring something to put my leftovers in. My chickens love leftovers.

I do tip when I get a take out order. I have seen a lot of people not tip on take out. I agree that someone should be compensated for packing my bag. I don't agree with a restaurant imposed tip. What if I got louse service and I want to tip less than they have added to my bill? That restaurant would not be seeing me again.

Where can I find collapsible bowls? The few times that I do eat out, I always have leftovers and I always want to take them with me.
