We do have foxes in San Diego, both Red and Grey fox. They are almost never seen though, it is unlikly a fox did this, but to me sounds like it could be a coyote. They often come in the day and snatch prey.

A grey could not haul off this size bird a red could but normally does not try for such a big prey coyotes and bobcat would tackle this easily if a cat did it the cat will halfway bury/cache the remains/bird for later B'cats are fairly easily cage trapped just google bobcat cage trapping several good links come up

OK good, so the cat will probably last a while on the meat, giving us more time to prepare!

These are the claw marks on the fence. The fence is five feet tall.

a pic says a 1000 words, now i see why you cant shoot, etc.. is the fence the property line? can you trap in the canyon? yes that is probably bobcat, I believe coon wouldve went through it,, but a large cat would have a problem, is the bars on the fence on 4" center?

I knew pics would do some good. The canyon is open for people to hike through but I'm not sure if trapping is aloud. Yep, I'm pretty sure the bars are about 4" center.

We will, we will, sheesh! We don't have a trap and traps cost $75-$200. So we're working on building one.

rent a trap from one of the feedstores

I really didn't know you could! I'll look into that.

Setting a trap for a cat is kinda tricky, The bobcats ive killed moved through the woods like ghost, they are very alert, and seems to notice every movement and noise,(loud noises from inside of the house could scare it off) from every squirrel, bird etc.. in the woods, they have a sense of smell, but not supercharged like a dogs, (but dont under estimate it)youll need some small movements to attract them to the trap, like a white feather in the wind, to draw it close to the trap, then what ever you bait it with needs to kinda strong smelling to bring him in (catfood or tuna works), if you do catch 1 be very careful they will kill themselves to get to you, and I still wouldnt be surprised if you catch a coon first, but after the first catch dont stop setting the trap, keep trapping for a few months afterword..
