"Hi everyone!

My name is Murphy and I am a 10 week old White Marans Cockerel. My name used to be Pearl but I came out of the closet a couple weeks ago and now my mommy says I need a new home--so much for tolerance, mom! My sisters and I were adopted from My Pet Chicken on April 7, 2014.

My family hand has raised me from the time I was one day so I really like people! I also like to give kisses but mom doesn't seem too happy about that since I have a beak. Maybe I just need to work on my technique.

I mostly get along with my sisters but I'm going through a lot of changes right now (gotta love puberty!) so I have a lot of emotions. I recently discovered my new favorite hobby--singing!--and I love to serenade the neighborhood bright and early to let them know a new day has arrived. They love my performances.

Mom's really sad to see me leave; don't tell my sisters but I was her favorite. To be honest, I'm pretty sad too. I think we'd both like it if my mom could come visit me at my new home. She'd keep me here if she could but our neighborhood doesn't allow singing (hehehe!) birds but she wants me to have a new family that will love me just as much as she loves me. She just wants to make sure that I'll be happy, comfortable and that I'll get to live out the rest of my natural lifespan at my new digs.

I live in Reseda, California so we're looking for a new family for me within 50 miles of Los Angeles.

I know it's not within 50 miles of LA but San Diego could work. I'd be happy to drive him down (I'll take any excuse to go down, actually). Are you interested?
 
I want to make sure he'll be well cared for so do you mind answering a couple questions? Could you describe your current chicken setup to me? Do you have other chickens? Do you have a veterinarian and how would you handle an emergency, should the unimaginable happen? Do you have other pets? Will your hens enjoy a lengthy retirement after they're no longer laying? Etc.

I'm sorry for being a pain--I just want to make sure he'll be loved and well cared for.
 
My ID picture is my chicken coop that my husband build last year and my two daughters and I painted. It has eight nesting boxes but not all of them are used as my hens like to lay in two or three boxes only. At least they rotate boxes. I have a chicken run that measures 10'X20' that is attached to the coop as the coop has a back door. The run is open all day as my hens roam my 50'x60'-65' backyard all day. I do not like them to be "cooped up". I put them to sleep in the coop and some of them like to sleep in the run since it has roosts and a swing for them. I feed them organic vegetables (carrots, kale, lettuce) and some organic vegetables, they love golden delicious apples from my tree. Their commercial feed is non GMO soy-free and corn-free Freedom by King Feed. I switched from Modesto Organic Soy-free feed because it contains Canola oil which is not healthy for human consumption. I have done some research and have not found a good feed with meets all the requirements. I have one RIR mix, (Penny) five BRs, (Rocky, Salt, Pepper, Blossom, and Negrita) one Swedish Flower, (Daisy) five Ameraucanas, (Guera, Cleo, Goldie, Henny, and Jenny) one barnyard mix that lays blue eggs, (Morena) one Penedesenca, (Tempie) one Andalusian, (Lucy) one Sicilian Buttercup, (Chiquitita) one Silkie, (Chutzpah) one "Silkie mix" (Alma) that lays blue eggs, one white Rock, (Pearl) and one GLW (Bloom). I also have a BR rooster (Sir. Crowsalot) who is very gentle with the girls. I got the "chicken Pox", as my teenager calls it, last year when a friend of mine gave me a chicken that her hens were abusing. I felt in love with her personality as she was very social sought interaction with my girls and myself. We called her Luna. So in April of last year I purchased Penny and Rocky when they were four and eight weeks old from a local breeder. Since then I discovered that I am a chicken person. I love each one of my hens and my boy as they have different "personalities". I do no believe in slaughtering my hens or rooster as I believe they have earned they keep by laying eggs every day for most of their lives. I read that hens live up to ten years. I have great joy every morning when I go to check on them. I also live my bedroom sliding door slightly open so that I can hear them should a predator show up. My hens sleep safely in their protected environment but I need to be available. The rooster is a very misunderstood animal. My rooster protects the hens by making warning calls whenever a hawk has passed by overheard and when he finds food in the yard he calls the girls to eat and he does not eat until the girls start eating. I also have a sweet female dog and one female cat as part of the family and never bother the hens. I have a veterinarian for my cat and dog and I figure I could use the same doctor for my hens if the need ever arise. My hens have never been sick but I take good care of them by primarily providing excellent feed and plenty of space for them to roam. I am also a Registered Nurse and I believe in preventive care. My hens are treated sweetly by me, my two daughters (14, 11) and my husband. I hope I was able to answer all your questions satisfactorily. Luisa
