100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

I just swung by TSC on my regular hunt for Silkies. Actually picked some up! NOTHING except the red pullets is labelled though. No-one had a clue if any were Cornish X's, so I have three extra chicks that are probably straight run White Leghorns.

ETA: they told me these were Cornish X's.

They can't seem to be able to tell what they are with the labels, what are they going to do without them? I see many threads coming up trying to figure out what they got from TSC.

Cute! Cute! Cute! I experienced the same problem when I went to TSC.

I lied, the DUCKS were also labelled. I can recognise some chicks, but a plain yellow chick is a plain yellow chick to me, lol. When I spoke to the employees, they didn't seem to think it made much difference whether it was a Leghorn or a Cornish.

Could be. If they are CX they are going to be small...usually you can tell the CX chicks by the ginormous size of their huge orange feet compared to the other chicks of yellow fluff. They should also be a tad larger than their brooder mates. Last year our local TSC did the same thing....had chicks just like that labeled as CX but they were just as tiny as the rest of the chicks and didn't look a bit like CX....I passed on buying them. Small chick, small bird. All those I got from hatchery last year that finished out smaller than normal all looked like that too...small feet, small bird...small finished product. Could have just bought from the local TSC and got that, except their chicks were over a dollar more per chick.

It's hard to compare them with brooder mates right now, as most are Bantams. Their feet don't seem overly big. Thankfully my McMurray order comes on Monday anyway, and that for sure has Cornish X's in it :)

Nothing new on the broilers. The temps were in the 30's last night and I kept them outside in the dog kennel. I put my handy dandy Harbor Freight tarps around the dog kennel. All of them are doing fine. No other losses since the few that were smashed. No leg issues or any other health problems.

The sand was doing ok but I wanted to add hay to it. The hay has worked great in the kennel. Tomorrow they will be 8 weeks and I wish I was processing them but they are not big enough. I'm giving it 4 more weeks to see how much they weigh. I haven't weighed them in a couple weeks due to not being overly excited about their weights. I will try to weigh from the 3 different weight classes (Small, Medium, Large). I"m not expecting high numbers at all. :/

But at least you don't have leg problems right?

Slow weight is good.

I thought you were aiming for 2-4 pounds processed?

Yes, you are right about the leg problems. And yes, I am aiming for 2-4 lbs processed for myself. That will be plenty enough meat for me. However, I have a lot of people who have contacted me and they want to buy processed birds, so I will need some of them to put on more weight for those orders. I will process the smaller ones for me and keep the larger ones for buyers.
