100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

Yes, you are right about the leg problems. And yes, I am aiming for 2-4 lbs processed for myself. That will be plenty enough meat for me. However, I have a lot of people who have contacted me and they want to buy processed birds, so I will need some of them to put on more weight for those orders. I will process the smaller ones for me and keep the larger ones for buyers.
How many do you think you will do for yourself?

Note: Just hatched out 3 more CX x BR. 3/3 eggs and 3 healthy chicks.

They are white with black spots this time. Very cute, and big. Must remember to take pictures and not sell them.

And no pics??? C'mon!!!!

I just purchased a new freezer a couple months ago just for the processed meat from the yard (lamb, chicken, duck, turkey and guinea). I have 2 lamb to process in the next few weeks in addition to the broilers. If I can fit 50 in the fridge, then I will be happy. That's why goal. If I can fit more than 50 in there, then that will be great! The more meat I can pack in there the better.

I still want to get 10 broilers from TSC so that I can compare the weights since I have the slow growing broilers. :/

CONGRATS on the hatch !!!!!!!!! :weee :celebrate :ya

Can't wait to see the pics. What are your plans for the chicks?

And no pics??? C'mon!!!!  :pop

I promise tonight I will. I'm breaking out the backdrop and everything :p

I hatched 80 chicks... one has no eyes. I will be killing that chick tonight. Never in my life.. so weird. It's an Easter Egger. Ugliest thing ever.

Oooooooo, so we're going BIG TIME. Breaking out the back drop??????? :bow

80 chicks????????????

No eye chick. Poor baby. :(

I have many of them sold. I have more Silkies than anything, and I am growing them out to sell as pullets. I'm going to try to find a market for the Silkie meat, or sell them to the zoo (the males). I bring them in killed and they pay me $2.50 a bird. That is if I can't sell them. Best to get something out of them than giving them away for free. They don't eat that much worth of feed to get to the size I can sell them to the zoo.

So far this year I have hatched: 295 chicks.

Oh and my Peafowl eggs are in the incubator with high humidity. One is growing. The others don't appear to be, but it's only been 6 days.. It is also very early in the year for peafowl fertility here according to Jamie (zoo curator). Also my goose has started to lay. 6 eggs now. My gander is nasty as heck.. I can't even believe how his behaviour has gone from stand-offish to evil demon.. He will cut you.

Sounds like you have a plan.

You are busy with all of the hatching. I have not hatched one single thing this year and I am not complaining. The turkeys and geese have started laying and I have a turkey setting on goose eggs and I think she is on turkeys eggs as well. The guineas and peas should start laying soon. I guess I better dust off the incubator and get it ready soon.

My ganders sound like yours. The ganders have been fighting like crazy. They have injured one and he has been in rehab for a week now. I hope he makes it. My group of geese are meaner than a pit bull on steroids.

I want to take a break this year from ALL hatching but I know that I can't. I'm just not into it this year. I need to rest my brain for the year.

I think all of my 7 ewes are pregnant, so I guess I will be having lamb in the future. Last year I had 2 sets of twins and had to bottle feed 2. That almost killed me. I'm hoping for more males again, so I can put the meat in the freezer.

Work never ends for us huh. :/

If I have too many kids, I am selling them as bottle babies. I am NOT doing that lol. I don't have time. Tax season + hatching season takes up 16 hours of my day as it is.

ok-- why is the ewe not feeding both twins??? Was it unusual to feed the twin or typical??

As disappointing as it is please do weigh a sampling of chicks. Weigh about 10 for your records. You will want this when you look back and evaluate the FF experiment. And then to tweek this FF system of feeding. Maybe the slower growth rate is why the commercial producers dont use it. Maybe the next experiement is blend dry into the FF just before serving or keeping FF in front of the cornish 24/7 ? Maybe using just 25-50 though this time.

I'm not hatching much this year. I'm not particularly happy with the stock I have, My expectations changed-- not thier fault.

I have 2 cornish x chicks and would like to get a few more HOWEVER the 2 pullets are not pulling their wieght-- none of their eggs are fertilized. The roosters do not go near these bowling balls-- I've tried two roosters so far, No3 is in with them now. Or rather, the girls are in his run/coop.

If anyone has a suggestion to help these pullets please speak up.
