100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

Quote: LOL-- they ordered straight run BO?? I love my BO-- great foragers, and eye candy. lol THe males are barely a meal though.

That is a great price ont he cornish-- I will call TSC tomorrow and ask pricing and dates for corniish. It is a bit of a drive and that gas money would need to be added to the price. THe $4 at the local store is too much. BUt ordering 25 is not my first choice either. 15 is enough to cope with for me. 10 is preferable. THough if my 2 little babies make it-- they should be laying in about 5 more months, probably at 6 months old-- hmm, AUgust. CHicken math is a nightmare. lol

Last year the local store goofed and ordered 50 cornish but that order sheet did not make it into the order book on the check out counter-- so no one ordered and no one picked upany. After a couple weeks they dropped the price. By then I was knee deep in poo from my 15 from an earlier shipment and didn't want to look at another cornish chick.

THe best thing you can do with an upright freezer is keep it full !!!! When I have empty space in kitchen freezer I put in an empty box so the cold air doesn't fall out when the door is opened.
Actually either a bag of ice or a couple of water jugs works a bit better. Displaces the air and the frozen bodies help the freezer keep temps steady. Just fill the water jugs about 7/8 ths full... to allow for the ice to expand.

For What its worth. I ordered my chicks from the feed store.... They went to the post office, They started them out... They absorbed the one that didnt make it... I got the rest. Out of a box of Wellies 25 was the minimum order.... I got 23 and only paid for 23. Thats the ONLY way they will sell Guinea Keets here because they are kind of delicate to ship.

I wonder if TSC would do that as well? Worth a try.

I picked up 10 CX from TSC yesterday...big ol' healthy looking chicks!

They are currently chowing on FF and drinking from their nipple bucket, happy as bugs in a rug....little meat seeds runnin' around.

There is something that does not belong in there!!

BA?

My CX here are $1.30 each for straight run. $1.26 for females and $1.39 for males. Much better prices than any others I hear from. I got 20 for $26! :)
No tax on livestock at our feed stores.

Thank goodness.. Our sales tax is 13%.. so yeah, it would hike it up. There isn't any tax on feed for livestock either.

That's good to know, thank you! My partner was dead set against a chest freezer, he said stuff ends up buried and unused in the bottom.

Cornish X at our TSC are $1.99 each. I'm going to run by there again at lunch time to see if they get any in.

They are too cute. 10 sounds like a great number. No more 3 digit order for me EVER! I think if I get 10 or a small enough batch, they all won't be fighting for food like the 100 I had.
Bee-- can I ask the going rate at your TSC?? Dang these are cute-- and thank goodnes the cute is GONE by 8 weeks and they instead look "yum" ! KG-- glad the 100 didn't totally turn you off! How was the flavor of your dinner?? SOme people report a different, sweeter flavor in a bird fed FF.
Thanks. The flavor was absolutely delicious. With it being skinless, it was not even close to dry. It was juicy and very tender. I guess this is what customers who want smaller birds were talking about. Believe it or not, I'm very satisfied with my 2 and 3 pounders. So, when I get more broilers, I know the size that I want. If they will be the regular fast growing broilers, I may only keep them 5 or 6 weeks. I don't want anything over 4 pounds. Too much meat for me and the customers who want small birds. So, this will be a win win for me and my pocket book as far as the feed. :D

I think I'm going to go and get some.

TSC didn't have any today. We're going to check again tomorrow. I did go by Lowe's though, and get an upright freezer! It was $850 reduced to $583 and we had a 10% off coupon. Now I have no excuse for talking my partner out of a 1/2 cow. And he can't talk me out of more chicks :D

Good score on the freezer !!! :thumbsup

1/2 cow sounds delicious. You are definitely on the right track as far as filling your freezer. I think I"m halfway there. I bought a new freezer in October last year as I was preparing for the broilers that I have purchased. I have processed 1 lamb and have 2 more to process in the next month or so. Was going to process turkeys but I ended up selling all of the extra toms. Same thing with the male ducks. A guy came over and bought 25 of my extras. With duck hatching season here now, I will have extra ducks this year. And I have been so lucky (yea right :/) to have all male new born lamb over the last week. The only thing I can do with my male lamb is to fatten them up for the freezer. After that, I think my freezer will be jam packed. Oh, I almost forgot the hog, I have on my list. A guy wants to barter and swap his hog (to weigh 80-100 lbs) for ducks. He wants ducks and I want hog. Win/Win.

Once I can dig to the bottom of the chest freezer, the good news is that the meat is stll good, even at 10 yrs old. ASk me how I know?? lol

I'm glad you are finding what works for you!! And the paying customers!!

As long as the feed prices are climbing, the cornish x can't be beat for cheapest meat.

I didn't even look at the price but got all 10 for $19 and some change, after tax.  Let me tell you, these were hard to come by...they only get in 25 at a time and they are snatched up as soon as they come in and they only get them in once a week!  How stupid is that?  You have a hot ticket that folks are standing in line for and you only order 25 per week?  I had to practically stalk the TSC to get these few.

But, at the same time, there was a tub full of 100 worthless Buff Orps that they will probably never sell unless they drop the price down to $.50 each.  I do know this...about 4-6 months from now there will be a lot of BO cockerels advertised for free in this area that I can add to my meat processing~at no cost to me on feeding and housing them.

Good price. I'll have to check to see how much ours are.
