100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

So that's a good thing? The more yogurt?

Ok, so now I'm going to ask a crazy crazy crazy question. How is it that the yogurt won't go bad just sitting out (in the FF bucket?

Yes it is a good thing, means that you can do bigger batches quicker. I know it seems strange but yogurt is already bad when you buy it from the store. It is a form of fermented milk, the worst you can get is cheese unless you don't stir it. It needs to be stirred at least once a day to prevent mold (the only true bad part) and fed (adding feed) at least once every three days.

Exactly!!! That's why I said I was going to ask a crazy question because I know it's already bad. :lau

I'm always buying the 2lb tub yogurt that is on sale at the store for $0.50 or $1.00, so I have plenty of yogurt.

I learned more then I ever needed to know about fermented feed on the fermented feed for meat birds thread. There is a lady called Beekissed on there that seems to know just about anything you need to know for a homestead.

I am subscribed to the other 2 FF threads and I read Beekissed's post all the time. Great info.

I had yoghurt in my bucket for a week without issue. If it is raw milk yoghurt - I'd feel much safer.. raw doesn't go bad, it just goes sour.

I often leave raw milk on the counter to clobber for days to feed to the chickens.

So store bought yogurt should be ok you think?

If stirred and fed correctly it should be fine. The extra sugars will just take a little longer to ferment. In India they have a restaurant that has had a pot of milk biased curry going for 7 years

, they just add to it every night. If they can survive eating that on a regular biases there shouldn't be a problem with you feeding it to your chickens.

I'm excited about going home and starting another batch. At least I will be a week ahead. Not sure how much feed 100 birds will eat but I guess I'm about to find out.

A question......................Kinda off topic but same subject (Broilers).

When talking to non-chicken people about Broilers, they are saying that broilers are Genetically modified and are turning their nose up at me when I talk about broilers. I know that broilers are not genetically modified birds from everything that I have read.

Have you all experienced people trying to make you feel bad about raising, processing and eating broilers because they think these birds are genetically modified. Thoughts anyone?

They aren't GMO.....they are hybrids.......BIG difference. That would mean mules are GMO. I live in a very rural area, so nobody gets on their high horse about such things.

Don't they know that the chicken they eat is the same bird?
