100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

So, do you all pack your broilers in freezer bags that are larger than 1 gallon or will the 1 gallon bags be ok. I guess it depends on how big the bird is? So what size broiler fits in a 1 gallon freezer bag. I don't think I have seen larger bags in the store.

I gave up and put them in plastic grocery bags-- double bagged.

You might need the 2 gal size-- when I had the heritage types from the hatchery processed, they were weanie and thin. , and only 1 to a 1 gal bag.  Sorry it's been awhile since that event so I don't really know if the 1 gal MIGHT work. Depends on the final weights and if you cut them up.
My 10 month olds are about the size of a small turkey.

edited to correct my math-- they will be 1 year in May.

So you double bagged and then wrapped in freezer paper? I wonder if thick trash bags would be ok if the broiler is too big for a 1 gallon bag?

Found this thread this morning and just got done reading......

Extra Large. I can fit a 10 pound chicken in that and with extra room.. It doesn't say gallons on it. Extra large, double zipper Ziplock Freezer Bags. I just checked. :/ Doesn't even show the litres either!

It has to be bigger than 1 gallon though.. If you butcher the, at 7 weeks. they should fit in the large freezer bags.. though at 9 weeks we were really struggling to fit them in the large ones.

Where did you get your large bags from?

Where did you get your large bags from?
grocery store.
  • Keeps your food fresh
  • Perfect for all those items that are just too big for regular bags such as lasagna trays and baking pans
  • Great for storing bulk items
  • 13.2" wide x 15.8" deep (33cm x 39.6cm)
They are HUGE, I can literally fold them in half with the chicken in there, but it's the only bag that could fit them we could find.

These would fit the 7 week old CX, but after that age nothing fit in these. lol

The glad ones? They are shaped for a chicken. The gallon ziploc bags are shaped funky for a whole chicken, even at 7 weeks.

Here is a 7 week old in one of those bags.

Quote: Twin lambs mean fewer lambing issues-- and more to pick from and put in the freezer. YOu can send them early-- or look for other buyers. THe buns are already in the oven . . . . .

I'm not planning on hatching much this year either--did find a local source of pea eggs. DH said no. BUt I"ve never let that stop me.

THe easiest deoderant I use is coconut oil. Just a little awkward to use as it doesn't maintain a stick form as it breaks easily ( potato starch + oil). Otherwise love it-- most perfumes I am sensitive to now. Maybe natural fragrances make a difference . . .?

NO freezer wrap-- that costs money. My birds don't stay in the freezer long as we a lot of chicken and turkey now!!

Just two plastic grocery bags, twist to close and twist tie. All thngs I already have. Zip locks are pricey, and hard to wash for reuse-- but can be done.

THe turkeys I use a small white trash bag, the plastic is soft and I can remove most of the air. THe plastic easily punctures so I then put it in a larger plastic bag that is tougher a nd doesn't form to the carcass, if that makes any sense.

Note-- thee are not food grade materials so you may want to take that into consideration. A reason I do more and more fresh butchering. It is really nice to just go to the freezer though after a long day. Always compromises.

Large 4.5 L is four and a half liters or about 1 gallon size. I'll be looking for these-- I like the closure of a tie than the ziplock myself. Siplocks are not very durable for reuse.
