100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

I put the broielrs out today and they were running and tyring to fly around. I have cleaned their brooder and added more shaving. I had to shovel the old shavings out. I couldn't stand it anymore. I didn't like the way everything looked in their. It looked really bad. So, the old shavings and poop have been shoveled out and new shavings have been put down.

They are over 3 lbs and seem to be growing slow to me. Now, I'm thinking if I need to keep them beyond 8 weeks to put more weight on them. Seems like this is a slow process.

How goes the chicks, KuntryGirl? The weather outside is quite nice today!

I just sat out and did a chicken count. Not as bad as I previously thought. Down to 5 roosters, 15 laying girls and 8 female bantams. I have so many tiny eggs. I think I need to stock up on some future layer chicks.

All of them are doing very good. I put them out today and they are having a good time. I wish there was grass outside. But everything is dead dead dead. A few green blades of grass here and there but not a lot. You are right, the weather is soooooooo nice today.

I want to put them OUT OUT OUT but there will be some cold nights but week after next will be perfect!

1000

Someone came over yesterday looking for rooster but I am all out. Let me know if you want to sell any because people out there want to buy some. You may want to keep an eye out at TSC for chick days. They will some layer chicks. I also need layer chicks because my girls are getting old.

It seems like every place has a different growth rate. Do what feels best for you. You could process some of the small ones as whole roasters for you then let the rest grow out so you can part them out for the freezer. Even reducing the number of birds a little bit will help in the stress and amount of care required.

When I had mine and there were only a few cold nights, I put them out there and put a heat lamp in part of the covered part of the tractor. Something to think about...

That forecast looks lovely. I have no tolerance for cold anymore, but I still hate the heat. I usually enjoy this time of year. You are right though, our grass looks all dead too.

I actually just took three roosters to the feed store on Thursday. Our EE rooster got into a fight with the Silkie and damaged his leg. I was fed up of him. I only have bantam roosters left now. My order from McMurray in March has 8 eventual layers in it, but I'm definitely going to keep a look out at the feed store and TSC. We usually lose more chickens during the year, but the fence really helped.

You are absolutely right. I noticed that I have about 3 that are very, very, very small. They look like regular chicks. I wonder if the farm accidentally got them mixed up with the broilers cause these poor babies are not growing at all. I think I"ll keep them way beyond the 8 weeks.

I found the $388.00 plucker. It looks nice !!!!!!! http://cconly.com/home
I've been looking at pluckers from there also. They look very nice, and I'm not sure I could build one DIY for much less.
This is probably what I should have bought instead of having someone build one for me. He is still having a time with in. The motor is wired but he is having a problem with the plate.:/ In all fairness, he is not a mechanical person, so I give him an A for effort. Shipping for that plucker is $145.00, which makes the total price is $533.00. If you have the extra cash to buy it, I would suggest you buy it. I'm nervous that mine won't be ready in 3 weeks. :hit

Wow, after bills I have about $400 to play with. AND I still have to have a permanent coop. I'd love it though. This sale went on before Christmas so maybe by next Dec I'll have enough saved. Probably not.
