100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

Quote: I have heard the old timers like Freds Hen talk about by age 7 having the job of axing each bird. HOnestly I can't imagine the specifics enough, and I can imagine the first 100 tries not being 100% accurate. I do think a flat stump was the surfaced used.

We value the trees too. Maybe I could tie up a sacraficial board.

I was axing my first chickens, turkeys and ducks at age 10...it can be a hit or miss prospect, especially for glancing blows that do not land squarely on the birds with very thick, muscular necks. Then you have to put them back there, bleeding, squawking, flapping and with half their neck gashed and take another whack at it. That's why I so love the killing cones...two hands, quiet, precise, no blood spraying or drama with bodies flopping one way and heads laying there with mouths gaping and eyes still open.

And no blood all over the feathers getting scalded if you pluck....

How is there no spraying????

I don't know if this is the only reason, but when I processed the spraying seemed to be from them flapping around. I got it all over my face, arms, legs, and apron. If this is the case the cones prevent flapping around.

Yep, yep! They have very little room for movement, so the neck jerks a little but not enough to fling blood everywhere like it does when their wings and thighs are free to move. I used to look like the Barber of Seville back in the old days if I didn't do some fancy footwork to avoid the flop and splash but now I can just stand still and get on with the job.
