100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

I don't know if this is the only reason, but when I processed the spraying seemed to be from them flapping around. I got it all over my face, arms, legs, and apron. If this is the case the cones prevent flapping around.

I've recently been pretty splashed from one chicken who wanted to go out with a bang I guess. He bled out the quickest of all, but the blood was going in every direction. Not from him twitching either. My garage looks like a murder scene.

The trees are all bare and where we were doing it before the road could see everything. Didn't want someone walking their dog to see what we were doing.. Might call the police.

I have my killing cone on a post over the compost pile.

My ordinance allows processing chickens as long as the operation isn't visible from off the property.

I wonder about the wisdom of that stipulation. If it isn't visible from off the property, who would know anyway?

I don't have any regulations, but they may still call the cops and I'd have to explain things

CHicken Canoe, I can see that ordinance as just a way to keep the peace. ANd prevent the uneducated from getting a lynch mob organized.

THe police are not as "up" on things as one might think. Better to keep the police out of it and un-educated neighbors too. Besides most people , well let's face it , almost ALL people would rather buy from the supermarket than know the reality of butchering.

All went well yesterday. No losses but they are sure going through food a lot. I think I have some aggressive broilers. When I stick my hand in the brooder, they buck at me and try to charge and peck me . All I can do is laugh. The little fat buggars trying to pick a fight.

I will put putting their pen together tonight for putting them outside tomorrow. I'm hoping for great weather.

I'm still have issues with the shavings getting in the feed. I have a question for those of you who use FF and shavings. If it's time to refill the feeder and there is still a little bit of feed in the feeder and shavings are in the feeder as well, what do you do with the leftover feed that has shavings in it? Do you throw it out or do you mix it up with the new FF that you fill up the feeder with? Throwing the feed out is a total waste and seems to defeat the purpose of doing FF since FF helps with waste.. The shavings being mixed it with the FF is driving me nuts.

The garbage can with bag to collect blood was maybe 2 feet bellow. Room for error for sure! ETA: by error I mean blood making a mess.

The blood froze too while we were doing everything because of the cold weather. I slipped in it a few times. The cone was up high because I want to see what I'm doing. The garbage can with bag to collect blood was maybe 2 feet bellow. Room for error for sure! ETA: by error I mean blood making a mess.

From listening to your experience, that makes me want to position the cone at eye level while I"m seating in a chair and have the head inches from the 5 gallon bucket so the blood can drain directly in it.

That's a good point. I tend to look at good ordinances as a means to control things in a common sense manner. After going through this ordinance rewriting in my and several other cities they seem to look at a lot more things than I as an individual would do.
We usually approach cities with the idea that special circumstance ordinances for chickens are unnecessary since they already have nuisance ordinances and building codes.

I have a bunch of bricks and clay tiles that I continue to stack, elevating the feed and water above shavings. They tend to only get a lot of shavings in when they're startled.

When there are shavings in the FF, if I tap the container upside down, they sometimes come out. If I can pick most of them out, I just add feed. If it looks like it needs discarding, I scrape it out on a wild bird platform feeder. At least it doesn't go to waste.

I hate processing when it is below about 35F. In fact, I don't do it anymore near or below freezing.
