100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

Blood-- chickens usually do that clean up for me as they tryto participate even though its not their time.

I'm not a fan of feeding bones to dogs. Canned bones are supposed to be softer but I have not done this. My chickens are not strong enough to eat the feet, but I have read of others that do feed the feet to the dogs. Necks-- the chickens pick a carcass clean!!

You can spread out the fare by freezing much of it and portion it out. Myfreezers are for my own use, not retail sales.

THe blood pudings are old country cooking when everything but the squeal is used. Try scottish recipes. If I had grown up eating it, I would love eating it BUT I would only try blood pudding now on a dare. lol Same applies to chocolate covered ants!!
Dog feet are very high in glucosamine and is very good for dog joints :)

I hear they are good for stock, but they are so good for teeth and bones, and the dogs love them - so the dogs get them. I like to spoil my poochers. I have 3 of them ;P

The necks: at least 45 minutes of fun for my miniature poodles. Henry can eat one in less than five minutes.

The chickens do polish off carcasses that we do not use for stock.

I had an Asian guy purchase ducks from me a few years back and he was telling me about some type of pizza they make and pour fresh duck blood on top of it.

Here in the south, we have what's called Boudin. (BOO-DAN) They use blood in certain types of boudin, which is called Blood Boudin or Boudin Rouge.

*It looks like a sausage.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boudin
I used to eat black pudding (blood sausage) a lot in the UK. I LOVE it. It's pigs blood I think, but mixed with spices, breadcrumbs, pig fat. It is one of those things you grow up eating, and by the time you find out what is in it, you either care, or you don't! It tasted too good for me to care.

I've seen Bizarre Foods too many times where they eat very hardcore blood meals, like sliced clotted blood. I couldn't do that.
I'm so tired by the end of butchering a few that usually the guts are cooked and fed back.

If no one told me the contents of the sausage I would try it for sure.

Waaaatching an episode of Bizarre Foods explained the African process of slaughter sheep!! THey took everything but the pelt; and even scorched the head and legs to remove the wool. Very strange after know the american commercial methods of slaughter. BUt I truely valued their way and the using of everything.

Im a.future chicken pl
OH YES. Had this huge conversation on our farm page on FB.
For those of you who answered my earlier question about the commercial broiler chicken being genetically modified, the answer is a resounding NO. Many, MANY people BELIEVE that the commercial broiler is genetically modified to grow so fast their legs break, and their hearts give out. Cornish X (Commercial Broiler) are selectively bred to have the best feed conversion out there. This means that for every two pounds of grain the chicken eats, it will gain one pound in return. A Dual purpose rooster will have a 5:1 feed conversion ratio in comparison. Cornish X put on weight very quickly. They are selectively bred to do so. They have an insatiable hunger, and if allowed food access 24/7, will take full advantage. Let me tell you another thing... It does NOT have to be that way. Feed does not have to be offered to these broilers at all times! When you restrict feed you will see these commercial broilers (CX) acting as if their goal in life is to run, fly, and catch bugs. They are the very best scavengers I have ever raised. They will forage and hunt for acres in search of worms, grubs, plants and yes.. mice and toads as well. They are selectively bred to produce desirable traits. Herding dogs were bred to herd, Huskies were bred to pull a sled and Bloodhounds were bred to track. Are they genetically modified? No. Neither are the commercial broilers. While we are HIGHLY against any type of factory farming operation, the commercial broiler is used by many small hobby farms as well to produce the most tender chicken possible for their family. They are raised in organic, pastured settings by big names such as Joel Salatin. Anything that has been genetically modified can not be stamped with the "Certified Organic" label. I for one used to believe that they were genetically modified. That was before I took the time to research the breed before we took the leap into raising our own chickens for meat. I was afraid that they would not be what I wanted them to be, or act how I wanted them to act. Free ranging chickens was at the core of how our farm operates. I couldn't give that up just for the tender chicken my palate craved. After raising them for a year, my opinion on the Cornish X has done a complete 180. They do not have to be the frankenchickens we hear about. They do not have to sit in their own filth all day and have heart attacks at six weeks old. I like to compare the CX to an obese toddler.. If an obese toddler was offered a buffet full of pastries, French Fries, chicken nuggets and candy, would they refuse? NO. The CX will not refuse food that is right in front of them. Many adult humans have this issue as well. If we want our chickens to have that tenderness of a commercial broiler, but all the flavour of a dual purpose bird the key is grain restriction. If you restrict their intake of what YOU provide them, they are then forced to find all the goodness that mother nature has to offer. All of the exercise involved in obtaining that goodness creates strong bones, healthy organs and results in flavourful meat while still meeting our standard of an ethically raised chicken. The definition of Genetic Modification "Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification, is the direct manipulation of an organism's genome using biotechnology" So the bottom line is this: They are not genetically modified.

My phone keeps blowing up but as to US thinking its GM it is. whether through gene splicing or natural selection its still modified which is fine I dont get the hype thete are good hybrid and bad thats why its callef selection. The corn you eat today came frpm a plant with just a few kennels through gm manipulating different genes we have corn wheat and better plants. The fear of the unknown is the cause for panic. mules and horses crossed produce sterile offspring so what? The organic people and its good to eat healthy make up 1percent of sells we are the 99 To each their own. Ive ate the h*** out of gmos and have yet to grow a second head or my arm fall off modetation and excersize will change the nation before all non gmo prpducts will

Not speaking to the good or bad of gmos. want to stay out of that.

There is a difference between gmo and natural selection. Gmo organisms have had genetic material from some other source implanted in them. This can include animal material into plants and vice versa. Natural selection only allows you to work with the genetic material from the parents. Either can have some amazing results.

Technically no, GM by definition is something that has been altered using genetic engineering.

Genetic engineering considers the following (here in the States)
" Genetic engineering does not normally include traditional animal and plant breeding, in vitro fertilisation, induction of polyploidy, mutagenesis and cell fusion techniques that do not use recombinant nucleic acids or a genetically modified source"

Traditional breeding and cross breeding isn't Genetically modified if there's no GM genes in a parent.

Europe does however on a very selective basis consider some natural cross breeding GM ue to shady happenings at one time they blanket GM and use an individual inspection/investigation when needed. More often they just outlaw maybes to cover their butts.

Do you see the irony in ur definition OR A GENETICALLY MODIFIED SOURCE? Yes there is a difference in that gene splicing is more advanced but that doesnt make it evil. I stand on if americans get off their lazy butts and modiy animal intake gmo or not fantastic changes would be seen. if you do away with gmos all you are going to see is mass starvations in the future due to over. population. The genetisists are on the side of reason here

You also sa techiquely the genes have been changed to get the desired result thats why there ate so many breeds of dogs all from the wolf grantef lilies werent spliced but on a DNA level wr are synthetically the same factually speaking so speak santics all you want chicken people aremt smarter than sciemtist amd genetisist

Basic HS biology teaches us ALL animals and plants are made up from the same primortal ooze on a chemical level just in different combinatioms and orders. But some to perpetuate humans are higher beings when were not create mistakenand unfounded fears

So whether genetic msterial is changed instantly or over 1000s pf years ots still Geneyic Modification you cant cross a lizard with a chicken its pretty plain withpit fanciful explanations
