100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

Just as babies. The ones we have now we moved outside at about four or five weeks. Figured since these are bigger we could move out at two to three weeks. Is that not good? It'll be Jersey Giants and Light Brahmas, not the Cornish X. I guess we could put them in the hen house. There is electric in there. We'd have to build them something to keep them safe from the adults.

Cornish X are the size of a full grown Silkie at 2 weeks old. Just remember that

Other breeds are easier to keep inside. Just expect a lot of dust is all..

Ok, so they won't be kept in the bedroom or anywhere near the kitchen................LOL I've got a den at the far end of the house that might be good for them. Actually since it's warming up I could probably put them in one of the unused upstairs bedrooms. Or even the other master on the other side of the house by the den. At least that way if they get out of their pen I don't have to worry about the dogs thinking they're toys.

May I suggest keeping them away from bathrooms as well.. I can't relax in a hot bath if there is dust on every surface

An unused bedroom is okay, as long as you don't mind dust building up on all surfaces.

Mudrooms and basements work the best IMO if they have to be indoors. I'd much rather not have them indoors, but I ran out of space.

If you have electric in your barn, you can brood them right in the same pen they will be living in/out of.

 
do this. Meaties in the house might work for a week or so, but trust me, you'll want them out before much longer than that.

I have chicks in a spare room. Not meaties.. though I DID just hatch two CX crossed with Barred Rock this morning! 

They look EXACTLY like CX day olds. I will get some pictures when I return home. Guess I have to be careful who I sell hatching eggs too, because the eggs were marked as Barred Rock. I did not think I had any in this batch. 

If you do keep meat chicks in the house, do it somewhere in the house that is not often frequented or used for other purposes and has a door you can close so the dust (and smell) doesn't spread... 

You can't do deep litter in the house (it needs ventilation to work out right). Bedding will need to be changed frequently. 

My brooder in the spare room (aka chick/hatch room) is 5 x 3 feet. I usually only keep them in there for a couple week max. I sell them out of this room. I can't have people with chickens going to my barn to get chicks. This is the safest way for my flock, and the easiest for me to tend to. The room is only used for hatching and brooding chicks. I don't have furniture to worry about.

Dust, yes! Dust is amazingly thick and builds fast! Ventilation is very important and hard to do indoors without making a draft. We have modified brooders to help and ours get outdoors very young and we still have dust everywhere! If you have any allergies or asthma it will go bad FAST.
We use a tiled pool room we rinse out and its still thickly layered between rinsed. So its somethin you definitely should take into consideration. Maybe line your walls in the room with a plastic like a painter's drop cloth for $1 or $2 tacked up to protect sheetrock and such if you're going to have them in there a long time.

No, we're not crazy at all. I have been using the back room for about 10 years and it works perfect! I do have allergies but like you said, I don't have dust allergies. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke and "girly/floral perfume" that women douse theirselves with. So none of the chicks smoke cigarettes or wear perfume, so it works out perfect.

I do have a lot of cleaning to do once they are out of there, so that I can bring the next bunch in.

The other bedroom on this floor I could open the windows and keep a fan going to keep the air moving really well. But then I'd worry about them getting a draft and being sick. I wonder if we can do a 4 foot by 4 foot plywood box and line the inside bottom and sides with that cheap white shower board stuff so it would be easy to clean? Just put down a layer of hay / straw for them to stand on. With the plywood and shower board we could attach food and water dishes to the side and bottom so they can't dump them. Maybe if we get those bird cage type feeders with the metal rings that you drop the dishes into? Then it would be easy to pull them out and wash them and refill.
