100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

I think yours may be almost the same size as mine. I would have hoped for better results. I'm still amazed that some of the last ones were only 2.90 lbs live weight.

For all the work you have put in, it's ridiculous that some are so small. I think I weighed them last on Friday, and the biggest one was 1lb 8oz.

I was just sat under the carport mixing another 5 gallon bucket of feed up, and all I can hear from the brooder is "pffft….PFFFFFTTT….pfffft" over and over :sick  No wonder their brooder is so filthy already.

LOL @ PFFFFFTTTT :lau

I do this..."walk with me I have to do blah blah blah...watch out for poop! Hand me that thingy so I can clean poo off it please? Oh watch out for the cat, she's shady...how much can you lift? I have this thing I need to move on the rabbitry..." No one ever can stay...

Where did you get yours from again?

McMurray. I would order from there again, but without any standard chicks in the box with them. All 16 of the Cornish survived the trip and I've had no losses, but some regular chicks were smothered in the box.

I can't wait to order the heavy meat birds. :/

I love chicken nuggets as well. I like the idea of adding cauliflower. Sounds like a tasty combination.

And you are right about low on the pecking order. I would always see the big ones rushing to the food first and the smaller ones would have to wait to eat. I would try to pick them up and place them near the food so they could eat.

I think I will weigh some of the smaller ones to see what the weights are. They don't even feel like 2 lbs.

The problem with birds that small, is they are hard to get your hand in the cavity when you process them.

Need that recipe!! My kids are always begging for nuggets from McDOnalds- would love to have a food we can pack in lunch boxes.
http://www.skinnyminniemoves.com/cauliflower-chicken-nuggets/ Here is one. This is made with whole pieces of chicken, but if you ground it, it would be similar to the texture of McDonalds Chicken Nuggets.

Susan ground the cauliflower more than that. It was like a paste instead of chunky. You can do it however you would like it.

Great, now I am hungry. She made chicken strips too. :)

I'm almost wondering if I should go to TSC this week and pick up 10 more Cornish. I'm not planning on doing another run of Cornish until the beginning of September, so they won't be ready until November. I don't think 16 chickens will last until then.

HMMM!

I didn't think about that as far as processing them. Sound like I will have to try to cut the breast area first in order to gut them and then go from there.

That recipe sounds delicious and those pics make my mouth water. :drool

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing.

I saw something on youtube where you carefully hold the chicken up and let it dangle and cut out the backbone (spatchcock) sp and open it up and the insides will be easy to get out. I'm going to try it.
