Animal abuse of any kind should not be tolerated in any form nor should their be any excuses for it either. If you can open the eyes of the person, regardless of age so they won't repeat it, then that is even better. If this person is old enough to get curt and say several times not to lecture her, it is apparent that they knew it was wrong yet let it happen anyway. They had a way to end the suffering of that hen, unfortunately the adult in this situation didn't take the initiative and do the right think and then educate the child on what they did. It wasn't her or her family who was suffering, it was an animal.

Too many times on this board many of us see the above happen time and time again. One can hope that they see, as I stated, we are animals caretakers and in that, should be more serious in our care of those animals. A swift death, as good of care as we can possibly give, the basics of a first aide case close at hand or in our barn in case we should need it, and the basic knowledge and understanding of what to do should something happen. In my barn I have a first aide book for horses in case I ever need it, and have I had to use it? Absolutely. I have basic first aide bandages, salves, band aides, sprays, and some holistic medications as well in the cabinet should the need arise for them as well. I don't think I was hard on the OP at all, as if you think I was, ask my 16 year old son how I was when I realized he wasn't feeding our field mouse Tiny and she almost died while in his care.

I ask everyone, please, show a little more compassion to ALL animals. Take their general well being a bit more to heart, be then domestic or wild.

Carilynn, The OP DID learn, and already said: " I swear I will if it ever happens again! Don't lecture.

She's asking for help with the experience, and has already learned what to do if it happens again. I think all of us here feel the same way about animal abuse/neglect. Some are just more squeamish than others about doing what sometimes needs to be done. This is this person's first post! Let's not scare her off. There is such a wealth of information and help on this site.

Thanks that about sums it up. I understand NO ONE is intentionally trying to hurt me. I'm taking it all in. Beware flies, maggots, and baby flies! I was just educated. It was tough education but I am educated on you flies now! Thanks for your help EVERYONE. Wether standing up for me or adding education. No one got to nasty.

I have no intention of giving my chickens away because they are not getting abused. In fact I can have heads chopped. I had my dad do it on a perfectly healthy hen because she was very very aggressive and no one wanted her. In my own defense Blackie was close to me and though you may not understand I was overwhelmed with the situation!

Thanks to ALL.

You were all helpful and supportive. Some more one way than the other. Good job. Thanks.

P.S. I'm not going to do this.

Wow Do some of you actually treat children like this on a normal basis? The poor thing was trying to get help!!! They didn't need to be treated like that!!!! I think you need to grow up yourself!!!

PA...that is why I am a MOTHER to my children, not their best friend or even their friend. Perhaps if some adult took the bull by the horns in that situation and did what is best, an animal wouldn't of suffered...but I said what I needed to say and I know that ALL my animals get the best care possible...not many can say that.

And to the OP...you don't think many of us love our animals as much as you? Believe me, you have NO idea the sacrifices some of us have faced so our animals don't suffer needlessly because we feel "overwhelmed". But, you have to sleep at night and you have to live with yourself...I wish you the best of luck with the animals you still have.

I think that statement is rather rude, I think many can say their animals get the best care. I think berating people here is not going to help in the learning process for the OP.

Come on Really? As an adult with rescource, even I have been 'overwhelmed' on occasion. Let her learn her lesson and start supporting instead of telling everyone how perfect you are. This is a learning experience about the OP, not you!

Christ'sCowgirlChick, I understand completely where you are coming from and I'm sorry about your loss. While I may or may not agree with some of the responses, I think you posting was a good idea. I've learned so much from this site. Every day that I get on (and I'm on here A LOT) I learn something new. Do you have any DE? Maybe you can spread that around the area to help dry it out and kill some of the culprits. It's been a big help to me with drying the area out, which in turn helps to keep the bad guys away and the smell down. Welcome to the forum and good luck!!

Since when did animal rights become more important than human emotions?! Give it a rest! Yes, the poor thing probably needed to be put out of it's misery but would you kill your best friend or your child if they needed to be "killed" because of some catastrophe or freak of nature accident? No!! You'd let them go naturally!! The poor girl just wanted info on flies not lectures from animal rights activist. When animals become more important and you're more concerned about the animal than a human then something is very very very wrong. Teaching should be done gently and easily if possible and in a way that would not hurt someones feelings but when necessary "and not in this case" teaching can be done harshly, but should be a last resort. And it's not animal abuse to let an animal die naturally, it's simply not having the courage to chop their heads off, besides animals die from worse things every day in the wild but no one calls THAT animal abuse. What's the difference?
