* First I apologize for starting a new thread on the ongoing topic of my almost 12 week old cock. Whenever I click on respond I get the same message something to do with "AJAX..not parsed ..JSN" and have not figured out how to correct.
Thought I'd list facts as I know them and see if anyone has suggestions for what it might be or what to try. Sorry to be redundant, but thought I'd put what I have together:
-Seemingly sudden onset ~ 6 days ago with one leg he was not using. Was perfectly fine night before as far as we noticed. (Roost is only 4-6" off concrete floor.)
- No noticeable external signs of injury to leg or foot...that we novices could see. Joints felt a little warm, but hen so did rest of leg.. Don't seem to be swollen.
-Isolated in a cage of his own but kept in coop. (I know...maybe not a smart idea).
-Last Friday the 21st (~3 days later) when picking up to check...Both legs limp..Moved him out of coop & away from his flock of 10 others.
-Comb paler throughout this whole time...more of reddish-orange color
-White-capped greenish poop..don't think it is as bright as it seemed near start of symptoms
- Actually fairly alert through all this time, but not moving much. IF he does try it is by kind of using wings.
- Seems a bit perkier to some of us this morning
-All but two of chickens were vaccinated at hatchery for Marek's. Thought this one was, but I realize they can still get.
-Other chickens (all pullets with one other cock) seem fine as of this time.
Couple questions:
-I wondered if using an antibiotic would hurt him if I'm not sure it's a antibiotic treatable problem. Also, if he seems perkier today, should I just wait on even if it is okay to use.
- (Regarding whole flock) Is flaky dander & feather loss normal for chickens this age? (It sure seems like lots of feathers in the coop, but nobody looks worse...just lots of feathers and then also dry flaky skin when we hold & pet them.)
Thanks again for any advice. I appreciate.
Sad side note to this: We were hoping for straight pullets. Our two cockerels are quite nice and are handled daily since we got them at a day or two old from farm store (I have six kids and the youngest 3 visit & handle them daily); however, we were hoping to find a decent home for before too many weeks. IF I cannot somehow rule out Marek's I'm thinking I should not be giving him to someone else...unless there is some situation where it wouldn't matter..true??
