Looking ahead to lockdown, I have some questions about the Incuview incubator...

The incubator manual says to leave the turning tray in for hatching. Is it better to leave it in or take it out?

Do I leave the vent open, or close it during lockdown?

I read on a BYC thread to put shelf liner in the bottom of the incubator for hatching. Has anyone tried this? Is it a good idea?

I do not know about the incuview, but the Genesis incubator does well with the liner. The brinsea octagon had baskets with foam bottoms. To hatch, you take out the rails.

I most important thing would be to turn off the turner and increase the humidity to 65 to 70%

I've been using shelf liner for awhile. I love it. I don't think I've every had a leg issue since I've been using it. Give the chicks lots of grip as they start standing. Easy clean up.
The one downside is that it I've noticed it can be hard to get humidity up for hatch if the liner covers every square once of the bottom. The shelf liner seems to create zones in the incubator when every square inch is covered. What I do now is put as large a piece as possible across the center. Leave the top and bottom few inches without liner. Problem fixed.

I’m getting myself some of the of those next
I’ve never had them, but I’m going to try working on the celadon gene because my family said I’m not allowed to get any more chickens, so sadly no fancy laying Ameracauna or EE’s for me. My selling points were quails mature faster, and take up less space... I’m compromising

Quail are also good for Urban settings since they do not make a traditional rooster crow sound

Is this considered shelf liner? I just never realized what messy business hatching was until my first hatch last month so I want to eliminate having to clean through the net floor that came with the incubator. Or does the shelf liner have to have holes for ventilation and stuff?

It is, but the stuff that looks like waffle grid is what most people use as it allows better air flow.

That does look like shelf liner but the kind I use looks like this. It has little holes and is very grippy.

Thanks, I’ll probably make my own holes on that one since I’ve had it for ages and might as well put it to use somehow. But in the future I’ll look into the one you mentioned.

I never thought of that, but that is probably why the breeder I’m getting eggs from has been flooded with questions and orders lately; people panicked and trying to be more self sustained with a small, quieter, footprint.

Luckily for me my neighbors are a few km away, so I don’t have to worry much about that, which is for the best because my roosters and gander have been exceptionally obnoxious lately

The liner the want you to use is for holding cups in a drawer. It is type of rubber and lets the chicks have something to grab onto. It is also machine washable and can go into your dryer on low.

I would not use regular liner in an incubator-- It is not waterproof, has glue on the bottom and could cause spradle leg as the chicks slip around

Oh okay, this one doesn’t have glue and it has grip, it’s not just the flat paper feeling ones. But I guess I won’t use it just to be on the safe side, thanks.
